The decline in people’s ability to judge #quality isn’t just getting #worse in #politics , it’s happening in consumer #markets too. If you had the impression that #goods are much worse than they used to be, you are factually right! In both, politics and goods manufacturing many are exploiting this cognitive #decline. Exploring the reasons would be interesting; I strongly suspect #socialmedia manipulation is a major driver. #CriticalThinking https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/aug/10/consumed-consumer-goods-quality

Society is starting to look exactly like what happens when we spend decades treating STEM as the only path worth investing in, while sidelining the humanities. This isn't a criticism of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. We need them. Desperately. They should be well supported. But we also need philosophy, history, literature, languages, ethics, the arts, and every discipline that wrestles with what it means to be human. We need people who can understand the human condition, recognise propaganda, interpret context, think critically about power, engage with complexity, and ask not only how the world works, but what kind of world we ought to build. A society built only to solve technical problems eventually forgets how to solve human ones. #Humanities #STEM #Education #CriticalThinking #Ethics #Democracy #Society

It's not that scientists are 100% right, 100% of the time. But when asked to trust someone's opinion, I'll trust the ones that have been meticulously exploring a subject using rigorous standards as opposed to a book that was written by a bunch of desert peasants, then translated and rewritten scores of times. #bible #CriticalThinking #logic #science #Religion #atheism

But for children who basically are born with these systems, the risk is that they don't even learn the basic critical skills." #hallucination #confidence #LLM #CriticalThinking

More bitching about (American?) lefties: Some people work really hard to eliminate binaries when talking about gender and attraction, but bake it into many other things. Every post that says things about "Americans", "Republicans", "White people", "Men", "Children", etc. assumes a binary: If you're in this group (by the definition of the writer), then you share all of the characteristics the writer attributes to the group. I get the desire for a punchy, uncomplicated hot take (and I have been guilty of this), but it's not valid or true. Americans aren't remotely one thing, ever; we're a bunch of cats, dogs, lizards, hamsters, doorknobs, and squids shoved in the same bag. White people, men, women, children, autistic people, etc.: Similar situation: There is a lot of diversity. In many domains there is more diversity of whatever-you're-talking-about within the group than between that and other contrasting groups. Even Republicans (as much as I hate to admit it) are not the same; they're a bit of a different situation because conformity (i.e., "unity") via authoritarianism is valued so strongly in conservative groups that diversity of thoughts, attitudes, etc. is suppressed and then not displayed, but there are still differences (OK, I regularly say "Republicans" as a global stereotype on FB, trying to punch through the noise of blandness... I'm guilty of this). Comments like "The constitution was [description]" or "America is basically..." etc. do the same thing: they attribute one set of characteristics to something that is inherently not one thing. No matter what your hot take is about the Constitution or immigration law or the US justice system, you're wrong unless you fold in the fact that these are multidimensional mishmashes of the intentions and actions of many different people and groups. Most of us have generous character limits here on the #fediverse, and I think many of us pride ourselves on at least trying to do critical thinking and careful analysis of complex things. There is no exception for things "everyone agrees" are "merely [whatever]". #subtoot #uspol #politics #binary #criticalthinking

Varovainen nyökyti-nyökyti tällaisellekin iltapäivälehden muistutukselle informaatio-vaikuttamisesta, vaikka edelleenkin kriittisen ajattelun ja yhteiskunnan episteemisen turvallisuuden vaaliminen olisi varustautumis-propagandaa parempi tie, https://www.is.fi/paakirjoitus/art-2000011980107.html #cognitiveWarfare #infowar #propaganda #selfDefence #psyops #suomi #defence #criticalThinking #security

We’ve wrapped young people in emotional bubble wrap and called it progress, then act surprised when they lack the resilience to handle basic adversity. Teaching helplessness under the guise of safety has quietly replaced the messy, essential work of building critical thinking and grit. The outcome isn’t protection - it’s fragility. #youth #CriticalThinking #Resilience

Something I've been thinking about for a while: using AI well requires strong cognitive abilities — the very same abilities AI can undermine. A 5-part series exploring this tension starts tomorrow. First post: The AI Cognitive Ability Paradox, published at 5pm. At https://www.ctnet.co.uk/ #AI #PKM #KnowledgeManagement #CriticalThinking #ArtificialIntelligence
