Please help if you can: I am working with some students who are studying programmers' beliefs about software engineering folklore.

Have you heard of LinkedIn? Check it out. It sounds like you would love it there.

I continue to think that Linus's law ("with enough eyeballs all bugs are shallow") does not mean bugs get found, but that causes for bugs get found. "The Linux kernel misbehaves if this happens" ⇒ lots of people look for why. As far as I can see, this continues to be true. NOT: "Lots of people interested the Linux kernel, therefore all bugs are found quickly". That makes no sense at all to me. #subtoot

More bitching about (American?) lefties: Some people work really hard to eliminate binaries when talking about gender and attraction, but bake it into many other things. Every post that says things about "Americans", "Republicans", "White people", "Men", "Children", etc. assumes a binary: If you're in this group (by the definition of the writer), then you share all of the characteristics the writer attributes to the group. I get the desire for a punchy, uncomplicated hot take (and I have been guilty of this), but it's not valid or true. Americans aren't remotely one thing, ever; we're a bunch of cats, dogs, lizards, hamsters, doorknobs, and squids shoved in the same bag. White people, men, women, children, autistic people, etc.: Similar situation: There is a lot of diversity. In many domains there is more diversity of whatever-you're-talking-about within the group than between that and other contrasting groups. Even Republicans (as much as I hate to admit it) are not the same; they're a bit of a different situation because conformity (i.e., "unity") via authoritarianism is valued so strongly in conservative groups that diversity of thoughts, attitudes, etc. is suppressed and then not displayed, but there are still differences (OK, I regularly say "Republicans" as a global stereotype on FB, trying to punch through the noise of blandness... I'm guilty of this). Comments like "The constitution was [description]" or "America is basically..." etc. do the same thing: they attribute one set of characteristics to something that is inherently not one thing. No matter what your hot take is about the Constitution or immigration law or the US justice system, you're wrong unless you fold in the fact that these are multidimensional mishmashes of the intentions and actions of many different people and groups. Most of us have generous character limits here on the #fediverse, and I think many of us pride ourselves on at least trying to do critical thinking and careful analysis of complex things. There is no exception for things "everyone agrees" are "merely [whatever]". #subtoot #uspol #politics #binary #criticalthinking

I think some of our problems are made worse by the fundamental attribution error: a bias toward assuming others' actions are intentional (that's one way to interpret the FAE, anyway). For example, Graham Platner probably does not spend his days planning how to sexually assault women--it's much more plausible that he intends not to do that, but (if the allegations are true) frequently fails to live up to that intention. Not all cops have a basic plan to unfairly treat Black and other nonwhite people like shit; it's most likely that most of them have stereotypes (possibly from being on the force) and truly believe that they are always doing the right, safe, proper thing, because people with stereotypes don't know it; they think they simply see the world reasonably and accurately. The actions aren't much better without premeditation or intention; they still do the same amount of harm. However, assuming that every bad thing is caused by a dyed-in-the-wool psychopath offers very little possibility for positive change, in addition to almost always being wrong. It's much easier to demonize than it is to fix problems. Don't worry; you can still impose consequences even if you don't assume that every injustice is committed by someone knowingly and callously committing injustice. #politics #subtoot #SocialPsychology

When you're a Very Important user on the #Fediverse, and you spend 3+ hours writing dozens of responses about how something is opt-in actually (it isn't), and that you understand consent (after-the-fact), maybe you should take the next 3 hours to reflect on how wrong you are. #subtoot #hashtags #bots #relays #ConsentIsSexy

"I'm angry with Democrats so I'm not going to vote" is the thinking that created MAGA. If your disappointment with Democrats' continuing failure to live up to #progressive values means you refuse to vote or maybe you even encourage others not to vote, then congratulations: you have something in common with the red hat crowd. The overriding dynamic driving the #MAGA movement is not racism, misogyny, hating liberals, or even abortion; it is disappointment and anger with the government and with republicans for a perceived failing to do what they believe government is supposed to do. MAGA began largely as a reaction against #Republicans for not being conservative enough. A large percentage of Trump voters don't even seem to like trump, but he's their battering ram to smash the system; he's their wooden shoe in the gears. They were pissed and hurt and they felt nothing else had worked, so they were willing to burn it all down, or at least to roll the dice with "something different". Believe me, I understand the frustration. I hate the "lesser of two evils" system, too. but I don't think, boycotting the anti-greater-evil movement is the answer. #uspol #subtoot #voting #democrats #liberals #HotTake

Ich finde es immer wieder spannden, wenn Leute von "Die Wissenschaft" reden (und dann vielleicht noch andere Leute rausnehmen). Selbst in Anführungszeichen. Wen meinen sie? Einzelne Forschende und zwar jede(n) davon? Große Forschungsorganisationen in Deutschland? Weltweit? Die Uni? Die Unis? Alle, die in einem Bereich forschen oder nur die etablierten mit einer Festanstellung? Oder haben die einfach keine Ahnung, wie Forschung funktioniert? #subtoot

Morning, fuckers. I see age verification discourse has developed new branches. It's 2026. If you don't lead with "it's another assault on everyone's privacy pushed by the owners of the Internet and authoritarian governments" you're lying by omission and covering for technofascists. And it's goddamn Pride Month. If you don't talk about the harm to minors in abusive families cut off from online support communities, you're spitting on our fucking faces. But you do that year-round so where's the surprise. Do better. Or shut the fuck up. #subtoot

+1 for the rare but annoying group of people I could describe by "look, if you can't be arsed to reply, ever, I'm not wasting my time" with added "and I thought you were cool". #unfollow #subtoot
