IBM's 2026 Cost of a Data Breach report: the average breach hit a record $4.99M, up more than 10% in a year. Breaches involving AI cost about $1M more, and the time to identify and contain one rose to 247 days, the first increase in five years. When a company holding your data is breached, that data sits exposed the whole time it goes undetected. More than half of breached organizations had left sensitive data unencrypted. The average cost of a data breach has risen to almost $5m, analysis of the consequences of cyber incidents which took place during the last year has revealed. The figure was published in the 2026 edition of the annual IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report, released on July 29, and based on source material from breaches experienced by 602 organizations around the world between March 2025 and February 2026. According to IBM, the global average breach cost climbed 12% during the last year, reaching a record $4.99 million (£3.75m). One key factors behind the financial cost of a data breach or cyber-attack is lost business costs, either as a result of business lost immediately because the incident meaning the organization couldn’t sell products or services, or losing customers in the long run because they have lost trust in the affected organization. Cybercriminals know that this is a significant risk for organizations and are factoring this into their playbooks, especially around ransomware and extortion attacks... @bkuhn@fedi.copyleft.org Only developers who haven't had the joy of working with #IBM's XL C++ in 31-bit mode¹. Until we reported a bug and they fixed it, it couldn't reliably compile a while loop that iterated across a C string. It really is that bad. It inserts random destructor calls for anonymous temporary objects that haven't been constructed and misses out destructor calls for objects it has constructed. It's much, much worse than MSVC. But a modern open source compiler such as gcc really is a thing of wonder. I don't remember finding a bug in gcc in 25 years of serious use. ¹ That's not a typo. IBM closed down 25% yesterday and I'm not sad about it. IBM's relationship with Linux has always been transactional, never ideological: 2001: $1B Linux investment = sell more mainframes to cost-conscious enterprises.2019: $34B Red Hat acquisition = cloud credibility against AWS/Azure, not FOSS commitmentPost-acquisition: Layoffs, integration chaos, projects deprioritized when margins compressed. Think StackStorm.150,000+ patent portfolio = "defensive" until it wasn't convenientEnterprise-ified open source = made it palatable for corporate, not community IBM never saw open source as a values proposition. It was always a go-to-market strategy: Linux > sell mainframesEclipse > sell WebSphereNode.js > sell BluemixRed Hat > sell cloud/AI servicesHyperledger > sell blockchain consulting When enterprises started cutting software budgets for AI hardware, IBM's "commitment" evaporated. They couldn't pivot fast enough because they never believed in the mission. They believed in the margins. Real FOSS support comes from people and organizations that value software freedom as a principle, not a business strategy. Companies that co-opt community work for profit and abandon it when economics shift deserve to lose to actual FOSS projects run by people who believe in the mission. IBM's decline is the consequence of treating open source as marketing instead of values. #IBM #RedHat #Linux #FOSS #OpenSource

Shares of #IBM have dropped about 25% today. Biggest single day drop ever. A generation ago this would be huge news, but we don't talk or think about IBM like we used to in the tech industry.
