I've published some patterns for making your own tiny, provenance and governance controlled #ubi #universalbaseimages based containers for in-house #zerocve container images ; whilst retaining your full support and lifecycle guarantees from #redhat here : https://codeberg.org/aenertia/rhhi-comparison the tl;dr is for a lot of industry the dream of being able to consume and use #fedora #hummingbird / red-hat hardened images is just that. ubi-micro based pipelines give you pretty much all the upsides and few of the downsides of ingesting raw upstream bleeding edge, whilst still giving you the standard support case/2 am phone path. And for established enterprises is probably the right patern to counter all this LLM weaponization chatter.

Einkaufen gewesen. Selbstbedienungskasse (SB). Waren gescannt, Bezahlvorgang gestartet. Barzahlung.

Geld eingegeben. Festgestellt: "Mir fehlen 20 Cent."

"Barzahlung abbrechen nicht möglich." 🤔

Kassiererin gerufen. Konnte die Zahlung auch nicht abbrechen oder einen Artikel stornieren. Teamleiter gerufen.

"Einzige Möglichkeit: Kasse herunterfahren. Bitte wiederholen Sie den Vorgang an der anderen Kasse. Ich bringe Ihnen den bereits eingeworfenen Bar-Betrag."

Ergebnis:

  • ein Barbestand in der SB-Kasse, der keinem Einkauf zugewiesen werden kann.
  • eine entsprechende Bar-Entnahme aus einer Kasse. "Tja, das ist jetzt unser Problem."

IBM closed down 25% yesterday and I'm not sad about it. IBM's relationship with Linux has always been transactional, never ideological: 2001: $1B Linux investment = sell more mainframes to cost-conscious enterprises.2019: $34B Red Hat acquisition = cloud credibility against AWS/Azure, not FOSS commitmentPost-acquisition: Layoffs, integration chaos, projects deprioritized when margins compressed. Think StackStorm.150,000+ patent portfolio = "defensive" until it wasn't convenientEnterprise-ified open source = made it palatable for corporate, not community IBM never saw open source as a values proposition. It was always a go-to-market strategy: Linux > sell mainframesEclipse > sell WebSphereNode.js > sell BluemixRed Hat > sell cloud/AI servicesHyperledger > sell blockchain consulting When enterprises started cutting software budgets for AI hardware, IBM's "commitment" evaporated. They couldn't pivot fast enough because they never believed in the mission. They believed in the margins. Real FOSS support comes from people and organizations that value software freedom as a principle, not a business strategy. Companies that co-opt community work for profit and abandon it when economics shift deserve to lose to actual FOSS projects run by people who believe in the mission. BEGIN RANT

I used Linux, many distros*, as my primary desktop and everywhere else from 1998 to 2012. I used Unix starting in 1982, with Macintoshes off and on since their introduction.

In 2012, I moved my primary "desktop" to a MacBook. I liked it a lot, and a Mac is still my primary desktop. Since I retired in 2015, I maintain very few servers.

So my Linux sysadmin skills have atrophied.
