While the fast-tracked Datagrid project has been calculated to use 280 megawatts, the company has a secret plan to make it four times bigger and thirstier at 1000MW. An MBIE briefing from last year reveals Datagrid's goal is ‘‘almost double the consumption of the Tiwai Point smelter’’, currently NZ’s largest single electricity user. Datagrid want to nab a quarter of NZ's total electricity supply. However an Electricity Authority (EA) spokesperson said the authority had ‘‘not been informed’’ of the data centre’s ‘‘final capacity’’. Of course they haven't. And because Luxon's coalition is so naive, there are also datacentres being planned for Twizel, Ohau, Geraldine and Cromwell. The plan is to fill NZ with offshore-owned datacentres churning out AI-slop. And they're guaranteed continuous power at a fraction of the cost paid by consumers. Because a (terrible terrible no good) Dutch owned website contravened Texas law, Verisign was ordered to remove the domain name from the .COM zone, and they complied. This has happened before, and it will likely happen again. If a US state doesn't like what you do, your .COM domain name may disappear on you. The first is built in to the way people think: a simple but wrong view pushes out a complicated but true one. "I don't have a job - that immigrant has a job - he took my job" is a much more natural rationale than "I don't have a job, but that immigrant is contributing to overall prosperity, so he's increasing my chances of getting a job". The second is that neither centre nor left-leaning politicians are willing to keep telling the economic truth loud and clear - they, not the researchers, have ceded the ground to the far right. And third, of course, it suits the wealthy corporations and individuals that own or influence much of the media to keep people focused on 'culture war' issues - scapegoating immigrants - instead of what's really happening in the economy.
