#retrocomputing #sun #partbrowser Building the Ultimate Sun Microsystems Part & System Browser I have no idea if anyone else will find this useful or care, but it was driving me completely insane that there was no single, centralized place to easily search for historical Sun Microsystems part numbers, cross-reference them, or pull up a clean list of components by specific machine. So, I did what any self-respecting retrocomputing enthusiast and systems guy would do: I scraped a couple of vintage Field Service Manual (FEH) and handbook sources, normalized the messy data, and stuffed it all into a proper database. If you want to take a look (it's currently live in a testing phase), you can check it out over on osfom.org/collection/peripherals (scroll down to the bottom). What it does: Browse by Part Class: Explore components grouped by their classic FRU class codes (like 501, 370, 300, etc.). Browse by System: Find everything compatible with vintage workstations and servers—ranging from the early SPARCstation 1 and 2, up through the classic "pizza boxes" (SS4, SS5, SS10, SS20, LX), Ultra Series, all the way to massive enterprise hardware. It's been a fun little side project bringing some order to the chaotic legacy documentation of the Sun era. Feedback, edge cases, or extra data contributions are always welcome!

Mini Replay v1.1 is out. It features 8 Apple II games on a single floppy disk, complete with game help, loading progress bars, and selectable "infinite lives" hacks. All games are fully playable with only a keyboard. Mini Replay runs on any 48K Apple II. 64K machines also get a bonus screensaver mode that cycles through self-running demos of each game. v1.1 fixes a crash in Spy Hunter reported by @_the_cloud@mastodon.social https://archive.org/details/MiniReplay #AppleII #retrocomputing

If the 2014 Homestar Runner April Fools' Day toon were made today, the humorously outdated desktop theme would be for Windows 7, not Windows 98. "Stop buying computers from thrift stores, man!" Would apply to dual core CPUs with 1 GB of RAM. #retrocomputing https://homestarrunner.com/toons/april-fool-2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBZBMeuWXCE

This pixel-art cow is the header of a valid DOS executable, encoded as UTF-8 Braille characters. See the whole thing here: https://github.com/dbalsom/executable_unicode/blob/main/hello_world/BRAILLE.COM Try it in DosBox! #retrocomputing #asm #x86

The Medley Interlisp Project @interlisp@fosstodon.org · 6d ago
URAID is the low level debugger and diagnostic tool of Medley Interlisp. The name comes from "Unix RAID", the latter likely a pun on the insecticide of the same name. This 1991 manual of Medley for Sun describes the URAID commands. https://interlisp.org/documentation/SunUserGuide.pdf#page=61 #interlisp #debugger #retrocomputing

The earliest star of the dotcom boom wasn't Amazon or Nvidia. It was Netscape, and the stock went boom on the IPO, but Netscape went boom when it crashed into the ground. https://dfarq.homeip.net/netscape-the-ipo-that-went-boom-on-its-way-up-and-down/ #retrocomputing #vintagecomputing

Hey Sound Blaster users, does someone know if the Sound Blaster Live! (First, gold version) has an embedded amplified jack output to connect weak sounding speakers (my Microspot 5W speakers with the internal amplifier dead, using then direct signal which needs to be amp'd first), and if available where to control the amp in #Windows98 original Creative software ? Thanks 🤗 #retrocomputing

It's 3 years since I bought this delightfully purple motherboard (ECS K7S5A Pro, socket 462) and I continue to love it 🙂 #retrocomputing
