Seeing things about hosting websites on old phones, powered via solar, ....
The thing I don't quite get about that is they're connected via wifi. To a router that's probably just as powerful and could do that job. But it's probably also not solar powered.
So are these mostly art projects? Is there a way to make this "properly" a sustainable thing? What's the real goal?

I came into possession of some old solar panels so I made a solar-powered web server with a raspberry pi. It's been sitting in my garden for two months running continuously on sun/battery power.
Perhaps the continuous uptime is not surprising given the extreme weather in London this summer.
It's been running the nginx start page for most of that time, but I finally made a little zine site and hooked it up to the web.

The People's Permacomputer is a project dedicated to resourcing the specification, and then construction of a 'permacomputer'.

the project has been preparing, and has had some success at making discrete transistor logic circuits.
a related but as-yet not discussed element of the permacomputer project is the creation of a discrete transistor computer.
the point of this project element is to explore and build a computer that would not require complex semiconductor fabrication processes.
the endeavour is not so much laborious, as the team finds soldering to be quite a relaxing.
the problem is that the result may be uninteresting or not at all useful. the most memory we may be able to manufacture at any one given time will very definitely be below one kilobyte.
it is imagined that the transistor computer that the project ends up with will probably end up having about the same amount of volatile memory as the atari 2600 -- 128 bytes.
ROM will be another issue. perhaps some mix of integration scales will be necessary--TTL EEPROMs combined with transistor logic.

other avenues of research that may be possible to explore include:

abandoning hardware for some period of time, and focusing merely on software, enacting a kind of 'bring your own computer' ethos to the project.

closing the research phase on BASIC, as it has been proven to be an almost endless source of cultural wisdom and digital history.

Not quite sure, but I think I have stumbled on perhaps the next phase of the people's permacomputer project.
Consider: a modular discrete transistor computer system/platform.
Diode transistor logic. This I am making out of 2N3904 bipolar junction transistors, and signal diodes.
Not much is different about the computer compared to a modern one, other than it is made by hand out of discrete components, instead of being printed on a wafer.

someone suggested i look up #permacomputing and honest gut feeling from me: it seems to be the kind of vaguesauce virtue signalling wordsalad people on the cultural left love that sends normal people running, i can't possibly see how this will do anything to improve digital inclusion and lots of ways it will make it worse.
has anyone had any truck with the term? or seem any good irl impact? would be nice to have my initial feeling confounded

I'm originally from London, UK, now based in Alt Empordà. I make #CreativeCoding #MathArt. I use Linux since 2004 or so, currently happy with Debian though I need to find something else to keep my remaining 32bit hardware up to date #permacomputing. Most of my code is published under #copyleft licenses.
I started making music on classic #Amiga, using #OctaMED SoundStudio until 2003. Then I used #PureData until 2011, but mousing patch cables was increasingly not fun so I wrote pdlua to embed Lua in Pd and later fixed some things to let libpd be compiled with emscripten to run in web browsers. In 2012 I started #LiveCoding music in the #C programming language, which I still do.
Always interested in #fractals, I wrote some libraries to support my investigation of the #MandelbrotSet. I took over maintenance of Kalle's Fraktaler 2, but eventually I was fed up with its code and wrote Fraktaler-3 from scratch, to support deep zooming into hybrid escape time fractals. A companion program Zoomasm is for video output.
I have a lot of projects, most sleeping until I feel inspired to work on them some more. Currently working on Mandeltron, a thing that combines live-coding with the Mandelbrot set.

With Amazon killing off all the old kindles, they’re super-cheap right now. And it turns out that jailbreaking is a minor faff, but not too difficult, really. This one was £10 and is going to somebody who was pondering getting an expensive eink ebook reader just a couple of weeks ago. :D

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Ideally, riding my bicycle drawn electronics repair cart full of ancient hardware chips, from before the AI-FOSS Wars. I help communities repair their tech in exchange for a room and meal at the local inn, swapping stories and learning from one another.
