thoughts on the people's permacomputer project.

the project has been preparing, and has had some success at making discrete transistor logic circuits.

a related but as-yet not discussed element of the permacomputer project is the creation of a discrete transistor computer.

the point of this project element is to explore and build a computer that would not require complex semiconductor fabrication processes.

the endeavour is not so much laborious, as the team finds soldering to be quite a relaxing.

the problem is that the result may be uninteresting or not at all useful. the most memory we may be able to manufacture at any one given time will very definitely be below one kilobyte.

it is imagined that the transistor computer that the project ends up with will probably end up having about the same amount of volatile memory as the atari 2600 -- 128 bytes.

ROM will be another issue. perhaps some mix of integration scales will be necessary--TTL EEPROMs combined with transistor logic.

other avenues of research that may be possible to explore include:

  • abandoning hardware for some period of time, and focusing merely on software, enacting a kind of 'bring your own computer' ethos to the project.

  • closing the research phase on BASIC, as it has been proven to be an almost endless source of cultural wisdom and digital history.

  • FORTH. because many have asked (repeatedly), and we have continued to put the topic of research off.

please continue the discussion below. where is the project heading?

what would be useful to the permacomputing community at this stage?

currently looking over these:

"A 1K Tiny BASIC interpreter for the Intel 8080".

https://github.com/nanochess/bootBASIC

"bootBASIC is a BASIC language in 512 bytes of x86 machine code".

⚠️ PLEASE BOOST⚠️

---

TLDR:

the project is looking to 3D print some cases for the SBC it supports.

willing to pay.

also looking to design a better case.

---

as you may already know, the people's permacomputer project mainly targets Stefan's BASIC for its code porting needs:

https://github.com/slviajero/tinybasic

the project is based on the Arduino core. it can be loaded onto a self-contained single-board computer called the TTGO VGA32:

https://lilygo.cc/products/fabgl-vga32

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33041602035.html

this board is based on the ESP32 microcontroller. it supports PS2 mice and keyboards, as well as micro SD card access. Stefan's BASIC also makes use of the WiFi module on the board, via MQTT.

the project ported a text editor from 1977 to this board:

https://git.sr.ht/~vidak/peoples-permacomputer/tree/master/item/basiclang/text-editors/transcribed/edit/edit-conv.bas

there are 3D printed case models for this board:

https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=ttgo+vga32

---

the project is interested in commissioning a run of cases. we are hoping to begin stocking and distributing TTGO VGA32 boards.

is anyone available to 3D print some cases for this microcontroller board?

further: is anyone available to design a different case to those linked above?

happy to receive quotes.

A Simple Guide to Porting Your BASIC

You may have considered porting some BASIC code from one dialect to another. Do not be dissuaded, the process can sometimes be rewarding. When porting on BASIC to another, I have found the following guides to be useful:

Please enjoy the first zine produced by the People's Permacomputer Project.

It is intended for educational instruction for children.

Digital literacy is a very important life skill, and we hope to contribute to better human-computer interfacing.
