Talked AI infrastructure, speculation, and real utopias with students at Leiden today.

This was a guest lecture for the course AI in Society. I presented the argument from my position paper, People's Compute, and used the occasion to pilot some new material I am developing on speculative design and realism, with the working title Grounded Futures. The students were a thoughtful bunch and gave me a lot of provocative and helpful questions to chew on.

Uit decennia mens-machine-interactieonderzoek weten we dat mensen slecht zijn in het monitoren van geautomatiseerde processen om plotseling in te grijpen. We weten ook uit de luchtvaart dat incidenten het gevolg kunnen zijn van complexe aaneenschakelingen van menselijk handelen. Niet alleen bestuurders, maar ook fabrikanten, ingenieurs en zelfs toezichthouders zouden verantwoordelijk gehouden moeten kunnen worden.

Maar wat nu gebeurt, is in feite een groot sociaal experiment. Het veld van maatschappelijk verantwoord innoveren leert ons dat we niet alleen terugkijkend, maar vooral vooruitkijkend moeten handelen, met een breed scala aan maatschappelijke partijen. We zouden dit als een proces van continu leren moeten benaderen: monitoren wat de gevolgen zijn voor het bredere verkeerssysteem, en tijdig bijsturen als dat nodig blijkt.

What better place to explore regenerative community computing than at Creative Coding Utrecht, home of artist Sunjoo Lee's electric garden?

Last Friday, Sunjoo Lee, Fieke Jansen, Lena Trotereau and I ran a second iteration of our workshop "From Soil to Servers." We had a diverse, thoughtful group of people come together to build small devices powered by microbial fuel cells, and to envision what those hands-on experiences might mean for ideas of the future of a computing that is sustainable in the proper sense of the word. All of it once again captured by Lena in a live drawing.

It is always a pleasure to bring a design research perspective to a new context. Today, I presented my talk, "Designing AI for Autonomy as a Political Project," at the Dutch Data Protection Authority's AI & Algorithm Seminar.

Started the week with the distinct pleasure of delivering a guest lecture on ethical issues in AI for our second-year bachelor students in Aerospace Engineering.
