This week in privacy:

  • A US appeals court said border agents can search your phone with no warrant.
  • A researcher found Shark robot vacuums can be turned into spy cameras (still unpatched).
  • Google rolled out face-video sign-in - new biometric data to store.
  • The EFF found most health wearables lack basic privacy protections.

The bright spot: California launched DROP, a free tool to bulk-delete you from data brokers.

USA Public Data Search (usa-official.com) aggregates public records - names, addresses, and family members. Removal is free, no account needed: search your name at usa-official.com/optout, select your records, and click the emailed verification link. Use an email alias, not your real address, since you're handing an email to a data broker. #databrokers #optout #privacy #indigoprivacy

Banks have reported cash over $10,000 to FinCEN since 1970 — a threshold never adjusted for inflation. It would be near $80,000 in today's money, so routine transactions now flood a database federal investigators mine at will. #privacy #fintech #indigoprivacy

Bitwarden is a free, open-source password manager. Unlimited passwords, unlimited devices, end-to-end encrypted so Bitwarden itself can't read your vault. The code is public and independently audited. Reused passwords are how most account breaches start. #Bitwarden #passwords #privacy #indigoprivacy

New Jersey's legislature passed the Fair Price Protection Act, the first state ban on grocery "surveillance pricing" - using AI and your data to charge different shoppers different prices for the same item. It also freezes new electronic shelf labels for a year. California's AB 2564 would ban the practice statewide. #surveillancepricing #NewJersey #California #privacy #indigoprivacy

Intelius, TruthFinder, Instant Checkmate, and US Search are all owned by PeopleConnect. One free suppression request at suppression.peopleconnect.us covers your background report on all four. Note: deleting your User Data does NOT remove your listing — that's a separate tool. Use an email alias, not your real address. #intelius #databrokers #optout #privacy #indigoprivacy

"One click to join, a dozen to cancel" is a dark pattern, the same one that makes "accept all cookies" one tap and opting out a slog. NYC is the first US city to ban it for subscriptions: joined online, cancel online. In force Oct 1. #darkpatterns #clicktocancel #privacy #indigoprivacy

The LAPD let its Flock Safety contract lapse over privacy and civil-liberties concerns. Its license-plate cameras have flagged innocent drivers as stolen and stored plate data up to 30 days. A major police department walking away from ALPR is rare. #Flock #LAPD #ALPR #indigoprivacy
