‘DO NOT MENTION #ALPR USAGE’: How #Cops Are Trying to Hide Their Use of #Flock When cops use Flock to arrest someone in #WapelloCounty , #Iowa , they don’t want them to know. A usage policy for the automated license plate reader #cameras in the county tells police, in no uncertain terms, to keep them a secret: “DO NOT MENTION ALPR USAGE TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE,” the policy document reads. “DO NOT MENTION ALPR USAGE IN YOUR REPORT OR COMPLAINT UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.” The police guidance document is unusual in how clearly it tells police not to mention their Flock use, but it also highlights several important things in the Flock debate. While Flock likes to say that it is a #transparent #surveillance company and that it cares about “accountability” and “governance,” some of its customers believe its use should be kept secret. #privacy #tracking https://www.404media.co/do-not-mention-alpr-usage-how-cops-are-trying-to-hide-the-existence-of-flock/

https://habr.com/ru/articles/1064698/

A useful talk about privacy on the internet. It starts with good reasons why it matters. Then gives some basic tips and ends with some more radical tactics to avoid tracking... which I'm not sure are necessary in the EU. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0IfCfhOHN4 #Privacy #Tracking #VPN #Cookies #DigitalPrivacy #Cybersecurity #OpSec

To powinna byc afera na pol internetu: https://www.windowslatest.com/2026/07/10/you-cant-fully-disable-microsofts-gdid-windows-11-tracker-but-these-settings-limit-what-it-captures/ "A Global Device ID (GDID) is a permanent, unique digital fingerprint that Microsoft automatically assigns to your computer when you install Windows or sign into a Microsoft account. Microsoft uses it to manage software licensing and Windows Store apps, but because it links all your online activities on that computer back to a single identity, law enforcement can use it to track a device’s true owner across the internet It survives Windows updates. It does not survive a clean reinstall, and Microsoft’s footnote in the complaint admits “one Microsoft user could have multiple GDIDs” over the life of a single account." #Microsoft #Windows #GDID #tracking

The more I browse the internet, the more I realize that the new normal is that privacy is the responsibility of the user, that websites, including cybersecurity companies whose professed profession is to protect, have no obligation to serve it to you, meaning that if you don't know better (which is a lot of people and the companies in question are banking on that), your data will be shared and sold, and that's only the tip of the data-peddling iceberg. We get to the point where you thank your stars that the company in question is actually giving you some sort of notice of data "theft" and a limited option to exercise your rights over data that has already been siphoned. Isn't that what ransomware criminals do, except maybe for the semantics of the extortion part? Why would you trust any company that has all the tracking and third-party sale and sharing options turned on by default? Have you ever tried to get a look at some of the notorious third-party buyers that some "security" companies are all too happy to do business with? Why would you even call yourselves "cybersecurity" companies instead of "data exfiltration" companies? #privacy #security #tracking
