#mastodonsocial #argentina #isp #internet

The internet monopolist in our area just raised the price from US$90 to US$100. An 11% price increase without any notice because "fuck you, we can, customer". This is for a meager 500 down/20 up connection; internet only, nothing else. One hundred bloody bucks. But yeah, "I'd rather have a private plan", capitalism, free markets, murrica, yada-yada... tough luck when there's no competition. #Spectrum #Internet #ISP #Inflation

I’m tinkering with a free #BGP peering service (by own VMs) for hobbyist AS owners, including free upstream connectivity at various locations. It’s still in the early stages, but I’d love to hear what features the community would find most useful. Wondering how and why? With @BoxyBSD@mastodon.bsd.cafe and @BoxedTux@mastodon.social, I’m already running platforms that provide free VPS instances for educational purposes, learning and testing for years now. I guess, providing real AS and peering services (maybe even sponsoring LIR in cooperation [but this would cost money]) could also be very interesting for several ones, apart from the DN42 network. Happily looking for feedback… #isp #network #networking #ipv6 #as #autonomoussystem #ipv4 #free #opensource #devops

Videotron cable: 1Gbps/50Mbps. Bell Canada: 3Gbps/3Gbps, ~ same price. 23 years with Videotron (left Bell after bad experience), thought it worth trying Bell for a month. Our address changed to a nonexistent address on the checkout page. Online support: ‘that’s bad, I’ll place the order for you’. Ask to see the contract and final order before I agree, they say no, assuring me: It is correct. I declined Last message from support is a doozy! We are staying with Videotron #bell #videotron #ISP

New ISP. I need a dedicated IP to open all the ports on my router. So naturally I call them on the phone. It goes like this... Operator: Hello, how can we help you? Me: Hello, I need a dedicated IP to open up all of my ports on my router. Operator: Sure, can we call you back on this number? Me: Yeah, no problem. Operator: Ok, so have a nice day! Me: Thanks, you too! Now tell me... Why isn't every damn ISP working like this? You need something, they don't hide it behind a shitty fee you have to pay or just ragebait you on the phone. They get the job done. #tech #selfhosting #isp

Well shit, I'll see how long I keep my P4L plan I had to involve the FCC to keep a few years back. AT&T is garbage for wireless, I'm sure their acquired fiber isn't going to honor my low rate from CL. #isp
