John Tukey the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) inventor, who coined both "bit" and "software" died exactly 26 years ago today. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), one of the most important algorithms in signal processing and data analysis, was introduced by Tukey & Cooley in 1965. In 1805, Gauss - studying the orbits of asteroids Pallas and Juno - came up with a method to interpolate their trajectories from discrete samples. What he came up with was mathematically very close to the modern FFT but Gauss never published that work, and didn’t analyze its computational complexity. It predated even Fourier’s 1822 work on heat diffusion - but without the framing or generalization that Cooley & Tukey would bring 160 years later. In 1965, Cooley & Tukey published their now-famous algorithm that reduced the cost of computing a Discrete Fourier Transform from 𝑂(𝑛²) to 𝑂(𝑛 log⁡𝑛). This leap made real-time signal processing and digital media compression feasible. From radio telescopes to JPEGs, from audio codecs to quantum mechanics - the FFT is everywhere. We are not Europoors. The median wealth of US citizens is 28th position. Almost all Euro countries, and all other advanced economies place above it. The median UK citizen has twice the wealth of a median US citizen. The reason is that USA today has wealth inequality on the level of absolute monarchies like Saudi-Arabia, and kleptocracies like Russia. Eurozone is doing great for regular people. In practice that means I have basically no power, no meaningful stake in the system beyond what I can manage with the strength of my own words, which isn't much. I have a vote, which I exercise, but I have few illusions about how much power that actually grants me: politicians listen to lobbyists and corporate chums and each other, and they regard the people as somehow being adequately represented by such folks as unelected campaign consultants and advisors and strategists, all of whom present themselves as People Whisperers, armed with metric tonnes of #statistics and #data that purportedly capture the Will of the American People™. All of those people are "public citizens", at least in my lexicon. They are in "public life", devoted to government or big business and sufficiently powerful to have the press within reach. No private citizen can do that—or at least, if they can manage to get news coverage, it's usually through extreme means like picketing an abortion clinic for long enough. And only right-wing extremists get such attention. (cont'd)

I recently discovered @betanalpha@fediscience.org 's writing on the foundations of probability theory, and they're very very good: https://betanalpha.github.io/writing/ I understand all this algebra and analysis is too heavy for most undergrads. But it does give the topic the serious treatment it deserves (topology, Hausdorff spaces, measure theory, conditional distributions over partitions) while still providing enough background to understand it. I highly recommend it! #bayesian #statistics
