This is the part of 2FA/TOTP that many people don’t realize: Your phone isn’t receiving the 6-digit code from the server. Instead, your authenticator app acts like a specialized cryptographic calculator. 🧮🔐 It takes a shared secret key, combines it with the current time, and applies the TOTP algorithm to generate a temporary 6-digit code. At the same time, the server independently performs the same calculation using its copy of the secret key and the same time counter. Same secret + same time counter + same algorithm = same result. That’s why your authenticator app can generate the correct code without receiving it from the server. It’s a simple idea, but a brilliant application of cryptography. You can even test this yourself: add the same TOTP secret to both Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator. Even if you set them up at different times, both apps can independently generate the same 6-digit code at the same time. And here’s another important point: The algorithm doesn’t need to be secret. TOTP is based on publicly known, standardized cryptographic algorithms such as HMAC. What needs to remain secret is the shared secret key. So: 🧮 Algorithm/math: Can be publicly known. 🔑 Secret key: Must remain private. Never share it. ⏱️ Time: Isn’t secret. 🔐 Security: Comes from protecting the secret key, not from hiding the algorithm. That’s a core principle of modern cryptography: A cryptographic system should remain secure even when the algorithm is publicly known. The secret is the key. #2FA #TwoFactor #Security #Cybersecurity #SecretKey #Authentication #Cryptography #Math #TOTP #OTP #AuthenticatorApp #Internet #SecurityResearch

John Tukey the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) inventor, who coined both "bit" and "software" died exactly 26 years ago today. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), one of the most important algorithms in signal processing and data analysis, was introduced by Tukey & Cooley in 1965. In 1805, Gauss - studying the orbits of asteroids Pallas and Juno - came up with a method to interpolate their trajectories from discrete samples. What he came up with was mathematically very close to the modern FFT but Gauss never published that work, and didn’t analyze its computational complexity. It predated even Fourier’s 1822 work on heat diffusion - but without the framing or generalization that Cooley & Tukey would bring 160 years later. In 1965, Cooley & Tukey published their now-famous algorithm that reduced the cost of computing a Discrete Fourier Transform from 𝑂(𝑛²) to 𝑂(𝑛 log⁡𝑛). This leap made real-time signal processing and digital media compression feasible. From radio telescopes to JPEGs, from audio codecs to quantum mechanics - the FFT is everywhere. It’s one of the most important (and elegant) algorithms of the 20th century - rooted in the genius of Gauss, but brought to life in the computer age. #JohnTukey #FastFourierTransform #FFT #SignalProcessing #ComputerScience #Mathematics #Algorithm #DataScience #DigitalSignalProcessing #FourierTransform #ComputationalScience #ScientificComputing #HistoryOfScience #Innovation #CarlFriedrichGauss #JosephFourier #JamesCooley #STEM #Engineering #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #QuantumComputing #ImageProcessing #AudioProcessing #Statistics #TechHistory #Computing #Science #InnovationLegacy #OnThisDay

The hierarchy of mathematical spaces

These diagrams illustrate the hierarchical relationships and nesting of various mathematical spaces used in functional analysis and geometry. They demonstrate how specific structures, such as Hilbert and Banach spaces, are specialized subsets of broader categories like normed linear spaces and metric spaces. The visuals highlight the essential properties required for each classification, ranging from basic topological sets to complex systems involving inner products and completeness. By organizing these concepts into flowcharts and Venn diagrams, the sources clarify how adding constraints like distance, magnitude, or orthogonality transforms one type of space into another. Ultimately, the collection provides a comprehensive map of how abstract vector spaces relate to concrete examples like Euclidean space.

Each conservation law is associated with a symmetry in the underlying physics (Noether's Theorem): ‣ Translation Symmetry in Space ➡️ Conservation of Momentum ‣ Translation Symmetry in Time ➡️ Conservation of Energy ‣ Rotation Symmetry in Space ➡️ Conservation of Angular Momentum ‣ Boosts and Rotations Symmetry in Spacetime (Lorentz transformations) ➡️ Conservation of 4-Momentum (energy + linear momentum). ‣ Change in Phase of Wavefunction (Gauge transformations) ➡️ Conservation of Electric Charge ‣ Simultaneous Reversal of Charge, Parity, and Time ➡️ Conservation of CPT parity

Noether’s Theorem ✍️

This equation reveals that every continuous symmetry in nature, a change you can make to a system without affecting its physical laws, brings about a conservation law. In simple terms, if the universe does not react to a certain change in perspective, it must keep a related physical quantity constant. For example, since the laws of physics remain unchanged no matter when you are (Time Symmetry), energy is conserved. Since the laws are the same regardless of where you are (Space Symmetry), momentum is conserved. Because they stay the same regardless of which way you face (Rotation Symmetry), angular momentum is conserved. This insight shifted our view of the universe. We no longer see conservation as just a series of lucky observations, but as a necessary outcome of the symmetry of space and time.
