Al Jazeera – Breaking News, World News and Video from Al Jazeera | Turkiye shutters liberal Istanbul university seized in criminal probe AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revoked the operating licence of Istanbul Bilgi University – a private institution known for its liberal values and home to about 20,000 students – effectively shutting it down in the middle of the academic year. The decree, published in the Official Gazette, cites a law allowing closure of schools deemed “insufficient” in education and training, and follows a state takeover last year after Bilgi’s parent company, Can Holdings, was implicated in a money‑laundering and tax‑fraud investigation. With the university now run by a court‑appointed administrator, the Council of Higher Education pledged “necessary measures” so students can sit their end‑of‑year exams and continue their studies at Mimar Sinan University; protests erupted on campus and the university, founded in 1996 and ranked 1,401 globally, participates in the Erasmus Mundus programme. The Guardian | I knew my writing students were using AI. Their confessions led to a powerful teaching moment | Micah Nathan by Micah Nathan AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. In his MIT fiction‑writing workshop, Micah Nathan discovered that students were using AI to produce polished yet soulless stories, which sparked a powerful teaching moment about the essential struggle of translating thought into words. He argues that AI‑generated prose, while flawless on the surface, eliminates the friction that cultivates both creative growth and cognitive endurance, weakening writers’ skills and undermining the peer‑review dynamic that relies on authentic authorial voices. Citing historical anxieties about new technologies and recent studies linking AI‑assisted writing to reduced neural connectivity and persistence, Nathan now enforces a clear policy against AI‑written submissions, positioning the workshop as a sanctuary for genuine authorship where the messy process of drafting, revising, and grappling with language is valued over effortless, machine‑produced text. I’m glad to share my paper on publication activity and migration trends of Ukrainian SSH scholars during the first two years of the full-scale war. 👉 https://www.jscires.org/article/15/1/124 The key finding: the most productive researchers have largely remained in #Ukraine and many have maintained or even increased their publication activity, despite the challenges. #Science #OpenScience #Bibliometrics #HigherEducation #Scientometrics #Research #Academia

Watching #TheMission (1986) in light of the current AI crisis in #HigherEducation. The other day I happened to re-watch this 1986 #film by #RolandJoffé. I had last seen it 40 years ago when it came out. It has aged quite well. The depiction of the indigeneous #Guaraní people is embarrassingly superficial. And the idea that the Jesuit order was a benevolent force is of course laughable. But as a story of an institution that willingly sacrifices its purpose and moral integrity in a power game, the film works. I can't help drawing parallels to the current AI corruption of higher education. In Cardinal Altamirano (played by the excellent #RayMcAnally), we see the manager who knows that his action destroys the very rationale of his institution, yet he does it. The two priests (Jeremy Irons and Robert de Niro) are the ground-level staff who stay true to their calling and fight, in different ways. They vanish. Years later, the manager has the luxury of regret. #StopTheAICorruption
