Minocqua Brewing Company in #Wisconsin has been stripped of its alcohol license for posting anti-Trump messages, particularly for promising free beer on the day #Trump dies. No reasonable person could take this as a threat; millions of people in the US as well as countless people worldwide will be partying that day. And we say so publicly all the time. But my shelves are full of female and male characters that lead armies to battle, fighting oppression, fighting injustice, fighting their own types of fascism in their worlds. You have Katniss in The Hunger Games, you have even Harry Potter in his own world. You have all of these characters that are standing up against injustice and they’re in fiction books. If you were to say that reading these types of books makes you antifa; that’s your ideology because you love reading these? Then all of us in the bookish community will be in jail. … If you were going to tell me that the contents of the box, the zines, the stickers, the poetry, that’s the crime—then we have a bigger problem here, which is free speech. That’s what is being targeted here, not my brother. My brother is just a vessel. It’s like they have to have a body to put in jail. PS: A few points in reply:

  • Then why did the ADA flagship journal publish the pro-science, Trump-critical editorial in the first place? Is the ADA now saying that was a mistake? Will it try to retract that editorial?
  • The members distributing copies of the editorial were not acting for the association. Or if that was not clear, what if they'd made clear (as the authors of the editorial made clear) that they were only speaking for themselves, not for the ADA?
  • Could the ADA preserve its nonpartisanship by disavowing the peaceful leafleteers? Did it think federal law required it to call the police to remove them from the building?
  • Would the ADA have called the police on peaceful pro-Trump or pro-Battacharya leafleteers?
  • Would it have called the police on attendees who sat quietly in their seats wearing "We stand with science" buttons?

A federal judge just torched DeSantis's Stop WOKE Act — the law built to police what a professor may say about race and gender in a Florida classroom. European governments have largely declined to label #Antifa as a #terrorism organization, despite pressure from #FarRight parties. In the Netherlands, the center-right government rejected a parliamentary motion to designate antifa, with the country’s justice minister telling parliament in May that it did not meet the legal threshold because there was no evidence it was an organization rather than an amorphous movement. #law #Constitution #RightToProtest #FirstAmendment #propaganda #Trump

A “concept note” sent to invitees & #US diplomats this week…characterizes next week’s event as a ministerial on the “resurgence of political terrorism.” But it makes clear that the focus is on “far-left terrorists” who, the note says, are “increasingly turning to organized, deadly violence to advance their political objectives.”

Several current & former #counterterrorism officials across #Republican & #Democratic admins, as well as #Europeans, say the #Trump admin’s emphasis is misapplied.
 “The Europeans were much more concerned about right-wing terrorism than left-wing terrorism” in the first Trump admin & the Biden admin, said one former official who worked in both.

In late May, the #State Dept held a meeting in The Hague on #antifa & left-wing “terrorism”, convening law enforcement & #counterterrorism officials from mostly European countries, acc/to two people familiar with the event. The Dutch declined to co-host, so it took place at the #US Embassy there, one person said. The event, acc/to these people, fell flat. Many of the invitees’ view was “we don’t see it quite the way you do,” said one of the people. #law #RightToProtest #FirstAmendment #Trump

That was followed in early June by a gathering at the US Institute of Peace to try to convince #State Dept personnel that “far-left political terrorists” were a growing threat to the country, but that event apparently was also a “dud,” acc/to Puck News. In November, the #State Dept announced the designations of 4 #European groups as foreign #terrorist organizations, including a militant group in Germany that calls itself #AntifaOst . 2 more were in Greece & 1 in Italy.
