Substack is still run by Nazis, y'all. That didn't change recently #substack I can get it when they put a skin on the page and hide the signups, but when it literally has their blood red logo right there on top i have to assume people don't know or don't care so I'm telling people again now.

#Substack thoughts: With #Panagram in full swing over in that space now I have to sit and think about this: Reading over their API references. Panagram reserves the right to "ingest" data that it scans and "store that data for an undisclosed period of time". So does this mean that Substack is now actively farming text data and teaching an #LLM how to handle it, and otherwise use it. How does this violate the #privacy of writers on that platform (I used to be one).

A word of advice for anyone with an online presence, especially on sites like #Substack and #Medium… Get your own website, and syndicate to those platforms after posting on your own. That way, you’re not at the whims of some faceless company prone to future enshittification. You won’t get cancelled because you said/did something the platform owners dislike offline. Companies won’t ignore fair use as often. And you have full control over the design and features. #indieweb #webdevelopment

My new article on how introducing AI detectors can actually backfire and make writting worse. @liztai@hachyderm.io You're starting from the assumption, IMO wrong, that this will be built with good engineering and competence. Substack's track record says otherwise: their spam/moderation system is already all over the place, banning users randomly with no real user/customer support. This isn't designed to tell you anything meaningful. It's a marketing line dressed up as a feature: "hey, we detect genuine content", not a working tool. #substack

#Substack has now enabled tools to "detect AI writing". Need I remind everyone that ESL students will get disproportionately flagged by these wonderful AI detection tools? Not to mention that AI detection tools are mostly shite to begin with? (If I write more formally, I'm almost flagged as AI.) What are they trying to do, encourage witch hunts? Instill a sense of superiority in native English speakers? Make folks with writing/learning disabilities feel small for using AI to communicate?? What exactly is the benefit of this tool, pray tell? Should I liberally throw in bad grammar to pass as human? https://hai.stanford.edu/news/ai-detectors-biased-against-non-native-english-writers #Writing #AI

re: the can't do spirit of U.S. techno-optimism Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
The commentariat has become infested with people who have no other reason to be in #media or #journalism than social-climbing and seeking the proximity of men of influence (and the occasional woman), giving themselves freely over to corruption and nepotism and swapping bribes. People like Matt Yglesias and Jesse Singal and the other hyperpolitical journalists are always hoping they might luck into a plum role that really brings in the bucks and the access to power, like being a campaign advisor or a star role on #Substack or something like that. So, sometimes I will make a comment about someone's use of substack. I'm just thinking about how inconsistent I am about this. I've never hounded anyone over it... I might mention it up to 3 times for particular people. On the other hand, I might never mention it to other people even though it's obvious that they use substack. If anyone ever noticed this about my posts they're probably wondering about the inconsistency. Why does one person get judged to a higher standard while another apparently gets a free pass? Well, if you're in the former group, it's most likely because I hold you in greater respect and I think you should set a better example. For the others, well, I'm not on a crusade here. I'm not a single-issue poster. I can still get around to criticising you for supporting a Nazi-supporting platform. #Substack #NaziBar #Collaborators #SJW

When I was a child I was forced to confront my boredom. I found a pencil stub and a scrap of paper. Much to my surprise I found myself drawing something from nothing. The restriction gave me the gift. What were you told you couldn't do — and what did that refusal accidentally give you?
