@AskPippa There seems to be a lot of online info. This is one that looks pretty plausible. I'm in Oz, so no experience as a tourist here myself: https://www.traveltomtom.net/destinations/oceania/australia/prepaid-sim-card-australia

@Kels_316 @huwr But, but, but... on bsky you said "the song Footloose, from the movie Footloose". You didn't mention Yet Another Teen Movie. Are you taking the piss here? 🙂

@Kels_316 @huwr I find several sources that seem to say the opposite. This is one: https://www.songfacts.com/facts/kenny-loggins/footloose But it is definitely not worth too much more work 🙂

@Kels_316 Not sure what you're on about there... I'm pretty sure the song "Footloose" *was* written for the movie.

@CaraBruar @timrichards That's fine. Term limits address the problem, without regard to the age of the person. You have to frame the term limits carefully though, so that people don't change jobs but keep the power and influence. I'd like to see laws that absolutely forbid ex-politicians (and public servants above a certain level of seniority generally) working in the private sector in *any capacity at all, including overseas* for a minimum of five years after leaving office, with criminal penalties if they are found to have done so. Quite happy for them to be paid by the taxpayer to do nothing. But they *must not* be allowed to carry their knowledge and influence into the private sector. Given that these proposals would constrain those who would have to make the laws, I don't see either happening any time soon.

@CaraBruar @timrichards I am dead against that. Why shouldn't older people be represented or do the representing? Yes, many people's faculties do decline as they age. But many others' do not. Assuming an older person is a dodderer is the worst kind of ageism.

@timrichards Australian politics in a nutshell, from "Keating", the musical: "You start out in your local council chamber You fight and dream until you reach your prime And if you should succeed By the time you get to lead You're pretty much exhausted from the climb. You only get a moment in the penthouse, Before you find you're standing on the sill And if you're sunk in ham and gammon When it turns from feast to famine Then you're lucky if you've had your fill." The same song has this perfect description of the Australian electorate: "Give us back our comfy bloody country Take us back to simple days of yore Nothing alien or scary Ladeda or airy-fairy Just put it back the way it was before." #AUSPol

@joannaholman I can't speak about Malaysia, but I've been in a lot of different countries, some in SE Asia, and the reaction to my efforts has always been positive (and sometimes amusement, but not nasty). Learning "hullo", "goodbye", "thank you", "excuse me" and "I'm sorry" are about the best investments in a holiday or business trip that you can make, I reckon.

@NewtonMark It's weird that nobody has yet produced a phone that can function as a powerhead in a desktop setup. Perfect for people moving between home and office, perfect for people who don't really want or need a laptop or "proper" desktop. Or maybe they have and it failed. I bet you can buy one in Japan 🙂

@dgar I used to, but I disposed of my record collection some time ago after ripping those I could not get on CD. I used to put stickers on my record covers with my surname; it's amazing how many people have asked me, upon learning my surname, if I sold a copy of XYZ album... because if so, they now have it :-) 🙂

@earleyedition It's made even more "interesting" by the fact that they have been *told* they are war crimes. Clearly, by multiple respectable and credible sources, and on multiple occasions. Some sources even being members of their own ranks (or retired from those ranks). US military members, from the topmost generals to the lowest of footsolders, cannot reasonably or credibly maintain that they did not know this. Participating is thus doubly egregious.

@joe Lovely panniers. I have a set that is now 28 years old, they still look almost new except for some scuffing where they rest on the rack. Mine are red :-) The waterproofing has held up amazingly well, the capacity is amazing. Only downside is that they don't fit all racks, but certainly most.

@82mhz @zhenech If it was serious problem I wouldn't have thought F10 would interrupt the beeping. On the other hand, beeping after GRUB is odd. Makes me think it is GRUB beeping.

@82mhz @zhenech Could be a defective keyboard or a weirdness in the keyboard interface. If you haven't already, try booting with various likely keys held down - start with shift. If no change, try a slow tap on e.g. F10 as it boots. The first sequence could be one long beep being interrupted by the processor having other things to do. "Real" beeps are usually way slower and clearer. Like the last one (the one before the one where you turned it off). Do you get the same beeps with a warm boot as a cold one?

@joe @nikcorg You say the bike is suffering - in what way? Usually all you need is to give it a lower range (i.e., replace a sprocket or two). The hitch makes a difference - make sure the hitch is at axle level. Also you want a trailer with a rigid base, not a cloth kiddy-carrier.

@troberts@theblower.au @jandi@mastodon.social @luca@sironi.xyz @aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au The kicker there was that the skin coloured body suit had drawn-on parts, and the pubic area was a map of Australia. The bloke held a copy of "Great Expectations" over his groin, too. I don't think calling it a map of Tasmania was original - I've heard it in other contexts including from Les Patterson.
