maybe a weird question but i need to know. do you like taking very hot showers, as in the temperature is so hot that it's just barely below or even slightly above your pain threshold? also, are you neurodivergent?

@coolandnormal arguably "do unto others" is a shortened version and not the actual rule itself. the original sentiment is taken from a whole set of rules, many of which concern with how you should take care of people in your community: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus%2019&version=NIRV specifically the part that's most similar to the "do unto others" is "love your neighbor (/your fellow) as you love yourself". but as you can see with the whole context, there's a whole set of rules about treating others properly, with no specific mention of "do unto others" as we know it today. there's a other version of this statement in the Talmud, where someone converting to Judaism asks about "the whole Torah in a nutshell" (i.e., what's the most important commandment). the answer he gets is slightly different: "that which you hate, don't do unto others". https://www.sefaria.org/Shabbat.31a.6?lang=bi&with=all so how did Matthew get into the positive version, "do unto others"? well I'm not a bible scholar, but if I had to guess, all these variations were well-known enough at the time of Jesus. we need to remember Jesus was speaking to Jews, so by saying a simplified version of this rule, he probably didn't mean to say "this version of the rule is the true one", but rather "this rule that you all know is the most important rule".

i wanna make something very clear.
we absolutely do not "talk too much about Jews in the Holocaust". in fact, we don't talk about them enough, because we don't talk enough about the Holocaust.
many white people, especially though not exclusively in formerly Nazi countries, *really* don't like to think about the Holocaust. they want to see it as a done thing, something of the past. "yeah, it was bad that it happened, we shouldn't do it again."
but the thing about genocide is it's not a thing that happens, then ends. there's a reason we separate genocide from other crimes, and that is that genocide is not just murder. victims are not just killed, they are erased. their memories gone, their part of culture not coming back, their language fractured so thoroughly it can irrevocably change and lose its identity within far less than a decade.
the Holocaust didn't "happen". it's still here. it's echoes ringing like that of a large bell, inseparable from the sound of the original strike.

and i wanna make something else very clear. the reason non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust aren't talked about is *because* we don't talk enough about the Holocaust. because people want to reduce this historical moment of people coming together in hate to erase other people in their entirety to just the phrase "six million Jews". the persecution of queer people and Roma and Jehovah's witnesses and Slavs and disabled people wasn't a separate thing, in fact many of the victims from those very groups *were also Jewish* (a fact that modern Nazis know when they deface their momorials with anti-Jewish slogans).

the Holocaust makes people uncomfortable, which is why they try to solve and reframe it.
sit in that discomfort. think about what it means.

@futurebird@sauropods.win not to take away from anything you've said, it's definitely true that this sort of approach leads to dismissing novel ideas. but i think there's also another level at which this kind of approach is worrying: by saying they need to sometimes dismiss the machine's output, one admits the machine is not to be trusted, yet they trust it when they can't catch it in what's (seemingly) an obvious lie. in other words, it's trusting the liar's word unless you already know it to be false. it's trusting the allegorical wolf to take care of the sheep because if you ever see it attacking one you'd stop it. if you know you can't trust the machine sometimes, then you can't trust the machine. and if your system is then "well i'll just catch the mistakes", then either you only intend to use it in cases where you already know the right answer (in which case, why use it), or you believe you'll somehow figure out something's wrong when you can't tell what "correct" looks like. it's saying "if it looks correct then it's correct". which is wrong both on the false negatives end and the false positive ends at the same time.
