They could have sent less internet sats to space and used more multiplexing and ground reflectors and made the sats out of more biodegradable materials
And they could have sent them higher up and used multiplexing to reduce the latency and certain elegant coding and hardware techniques but here we are
We could have the elegant coding of the demoscene everywhere and have more modest hardware that runs quickly and well as well as efficient but it isn't done because not taking the brute force approach isn't profitable and doesn't make the line go up
We also could have used anolog computing and basing some things in ai in neuroscience but instead we have llms which is based on shit like auto complete and is basically a glorified auto complete made to say shit like "you are absolutely right"
We could have had more sustainable power sources but the oil industry keeps pulling bullshit things
We could have had a decentralized internet and a sort of long range but fast meshtastic like system but instead you have to pay for a centralized name host and servers
We could have had underground network or processing server racks that are randomly spread around and community controlled and powered by solar wind or geothermal and also more vulenteer systems similar to folding @ home but instead we have data centers that take a fuckton of power
We could have had buildings built to accommodate nature and community gardens but instead certain humans and infrastructure choices are driving creatures extinct and driving those considered "undesirable" out through both hostile architecture and also driving a heat island effect
We could have a solarpunk community focused advancedness but instead we have a cyberpunk dystopia driven by capitalism and fascism
I hate how things could be better in this realm but they are not
I've seen better before I ended up stuck here in this fucking vessel
