You don't have to wait for the #Perseids meteor shower to peak to have some meteor scatter fun! You have a good chance of making MS QSO's a few days before and after the peak. The best time to do this is during the early morning hours. I just made simultaneous MS QSO's on 2m and 6m with the same station (WA4CQG, 821mi/1313km) using MSK144 on 144.150 MHz and 50.260 MHz. #hamradio #AmateurRadio #hamr #MeteorScatter

This image shows you why it's called meteor *scatter*. My beams are pointed at 225 degrees (SW), yet my signals bouncing of the meteor trails are heard in many directions. A tool like https://swan.ms/ can be very helpful to help you find where to aim your signal for maximum effectiveness. (Aim perpendicular to the meteor trails). #hamradio #AmateurRadio #hamr

A reminder that the Cat Pics on The Air #CPOTA contest is going on *now* on SSTV on HF and VHF, if you have the capability. Another operator has observed a reaction-seeking chud on 14.230 transmitting some symbols related to a universally despised political party from the 1930s. Don't fall for their edgelord rage baiting, but, as they have suggested, let's flood SSTV tonight with cat pics. https://cpota.app/ #AmateurRadio #HamRadio

When I first got my amateur radio license, I spent most of my time in the novice area of the 40-meter band. That's where I learned Morse code and got my Morse code up to speed so that I could go to other areas of the band. I really need to make an effort to go and see if there are still people hanging out on the novice area of the 40-meter band and slow it down and help some people along. I think it was somewhere around 7.100 #AmateurRadio #MorseCode

🐈📻 TOG’s cats are taking to the air! Throughout August, listen out for our special event station EI0MEOW. We have created 14 SSTV cat images, but you will need to find us on the air to collect them all. Find us at the @ei0irts@mastodon.social Hamfest on 8 August. https://www.tog.ie/2026/07/ei0meow-togs-cats-take-to-the-air/ #Amateurradio

I just had two younger people, one still in high school and one in their mid-20s, ask me if I would help them get their ham radio license. Of course I will, and for each of them, I promised that if they get their license, I would buy them a QMX Plus kit from QRP Labs and get them active on CW and digital modes. I'm actually kind of considering getting that ticket that lets you proctor the amateur radio exams https://qrp-labs.com/qmxp.html #AmateurRadio #MorseCode #QRP

We enjoyed attending HAM RADIO and connecting with members of the international amateur radio community, hearing about exciting projects, and sharing more about our work. Here are a few photos from our time in Friedrichshafen. We appreciate everyone who took the time to stop by and talk with us. #ardc #hamradio2026 #amateurradio #digitalcommunications

Apparently, some clueless old men were confused about why I have two ham radio callsigns and they angrily insisted that I'm only allowed one. They are wrong, dead wrong. While it's true that in the US and in some other countries, they only issue one callsign, however, you can still get a second callsign from another country and some countries will let you obtain 2 or more callsigns for use within that country. I have two callsigns because I'm licensed in two countries. #hamradio #amateurradio

A friend sent me this today. It amused me. Yes I have used a grid dip meter many times, but I bet few people have heard of them these days. I have no idea who deserves credit for the image. #AmateurRadio #HamRadio

#MakeShitMonday, mobile radio edition... I finally got around to adding a mag mount antenna to my car in the last few hours before a big road trip. It's an old, unbranded¹ whip that I got as part of a mixed lot of radio gear at an estate sale last year. The integrated coax cable was long enough to go in through the back hatch, around the back seat, and up next to the driver's seat. I had previously tested the antenna on VHF (2m) and UHF (70cm) using the main radio in my shack so I knew it worked. While on the road, I successfully used the antenna connected to my Baofeng HT to join a local weekly net in Indiana! ¹ The antenna has a label that says "Mobile Antennas & Access, Burlington, NC". I don't find any references online, so I assume they went out of business and probably never had an online presence. Has anyone heard of them? #AmateurRadio #HamRadio #antenna cc: @cannibal@infosec.exchange

We aren't where I thought we were. This rubbish photo is of the islands off the southern coast of #iceland . These include Surtsey and Heimay Islands. I only know of Surtsey from #AmateurRadio controversies about operating from the rock a number of years ago (probably when #IOTA was a new thing) Surtsey was formed in 1963 by a volcanic eruption. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surtsey #BoatTrioNorth #Iceland

I miss the old small internet: Carracho, BBSs, IRC, AIM/MSN, radio, forums, little communities where you knew who was online. Looking for kindred spirits — old web, radio, photography, cycling, analogue tech, slow internet, proper conversations.. #OldInternet #BBS #Hotline #Carracho #IndieWeb #Fediverse #AmateurRadio #Shortwave #RetroComputing

"Following the fatal earthquake in Venezuela on Wednesday at 5:04 PM local time (10:04 PM UTC), local radio amateurs have asked that that all amateur radio colleagues in the Americas and the rest of the world protect the following frequency used by Venezuelan amateur radio operators: 40 m: 7135 kHz." https://www.iaru-r1.org/2026/venezuela-earthquake-25th-june-2026-frequency-clearance-requested/ #amateurradio

Thanks to Christopher @M0YNG@mastodon.radio for re-activating my old and dormant account, which I first set up in 2022. He suggests an #introduction post, so here goes... I'm up in #shetland and have been resurrecting my #amateurradio interest recently, so I thought it was an ideal time to re-connect to the world via Mastodon, too. I've also started a #peertube account with #makertube to put up the occasional radio-related video. Cheers & 73, John #introduction
