recently came across academic research on the last pogrom and expulsiones of Jews in Spain. it happened in 1898 in Galicia.

this is HIGHLY significant for a few reasons:

  1. 1898 is the year of the Spanish American War

Yes, Cuba has problems with retaining teachers (mainly due to economic suffocation from the US), but neutral observers have admitted that the cultural and educational level of Cubans is very high. Look at how #Cuba reacted to COVID-19. They used their resources through close collaboration and came up with 2 vaccines that were hugely successful in Cuba. And they went on to help other Global South countries by sharing them at very low cost. And in 2021, when the mainstream media went on a feeding frenzy about the July protests, the Cuban leadership acknowledged shortcomings and spoke to many people directly about them. One rioter was killed. Compare that level of "repression" to Colombia or other Latin American countries when street protests break out. And it is widely known that the US was funding groups to use social media in an organized way to spread disinformation.

@soberaim@todon.nl @Miro_Collas@masto.ai Let's clarify something here - I'm not talking at all about Venezuela. I'm against Trump's kidnapping of Maduro and the takeover of oil and control. But I'm not going to defend Maduro against charges of repression. But I don't think Cuba is the same story. Sure, I wouldn't mind a Norway situation in the US or #Cuba. It would be better than Trump or the Democrats. Cuba CANNOT be like Norway because the US has been choking it for 65 years. Even if the management of the economy was ideal, I don't think prosperity would be possible with all of the #sanctions, which increase by the day. And that unrelenting pressure has a big effect on the political atmosphere. It makes it much harder to raise criticisms when Uncle Sam is supporting "dissidents" and other counter-revolutionaries.
