Thousands of containers filled with food, #medicine and other goods bound for #Cuba have been stranded throughout the #Caribbean since two shipping giants stopped deliveries to avoid tough #US #sanctions, according to diplomats, Cuban officials, merchants and others involved in the imports.
The containers stranded in various ports include humanitarian aid, from #SolarPanels to #medication to colostomy bags. Dozens of containers of aid purchased by different #UN agencies are among them.
US sanctions have also hobbled shipments by air, and forced the #WorldHealthOrganization to scrap planned deliveries of cancer drugs.

HAVANA (AP) — "Cuba’s iconic vintage cars have all but disappeared and in their place, small electric tricycles — most of them made in China — have become the primary means of transportation for hundreds of thousands of Cubans grappling with a prolonged fuel crisis.
These are no ordinary electric tricycles — many Cubans have outfitted them with #SolarPanels, allowing the vehicles to recharge without relying on the island nation’s strained power grid.
"The three-wheelers are a far cry from the old-timers that only a year ago cruised the streets spewing clouds of black smoke.
" 'This is how people get around now,' said 40-year-old Liecer de la Cruz, who owns one of these vehicles.
"The tricycles, with a cost between $2,000 and $4,000, are used to transport goods and serve fixed routes once covered by buses.
"While their price is out of reach for most Cubans, many have sold their older gasoline-powered cars to buy the tricycles. Others got them from relatives abroad, where they are generally cheaper, and some small-business owners even used their profits to invest in them, expecting to recoup the cost."

Electric tricycles have exploded across Cuba as the country faces extreme fuel shortages due to the #US-imposed #oil #blockade. But blackouts now last so long — 20 or more hours a day — there isn’t enough electricity to charge them.
So drivers are now installing #SolarPanels on top of their tricycles.
“As long as the sun is out, it’s charging the battery,” says Evanys Peréz. “Now we can travel up to 90 miles.”

Do you have an example of stealth solar?
I've been thinking a lot about 'stealth solar' where people attach #solarpanels to places in a subtle way to capture the sun's energy. It might be stealth as there are strict rules or just want to keep it low key. #balconysolar is sort of stealth gone mainstream.
With cheaper MPPT devices you can now accept slightly poorer efficiency due to placement and with microinverters don't need to make long strings. I particularly think that there is no point having a solar panel in storage, best get it out there and generating even if it's in a temporary place!
So I thought I'd start a small website that documents different stealth setups, so if you have cheeky solar panels and would be willing to share a little info (but not too much if it would get you in trouble) get in touch.
