I've started using mind maps for tracking the progress of my various client cases. I've been using a spread sheet to keep track of where I am with them, but it doesn't quite work as an overview. I tend to think in hierarchical formats anyway, so I think this might be helpful. #genealogy #geneadons #productivity #organisation

2/2 I think I'm going to export my family tree and just use GRAMPS (which I had already started doing as a backup), then start logging into actual heritage sites, like Scottish People, to do the heavy lifting. Yes, slower work, but no slop. #Genealogy #AiSlop #ScottishPeople #GRAMPS

1/2 Genealogy is getting worse, in my opinion. Ancestry and MyHeritage use AI to push so many incorrect family links, that in my mind, it has to be creating a feedback loop a bad data from all the people adding incorrect links. These companies just don't care about accuracy as much as letting us replicants create a made-up past. And the data is less and less based on actual documents. Links to Scottish People site is generic at best. #Genealogy #AiSlop

I was talking with a doctor last week about my early fascination with #genetics (due to a documentary I saw decades ago about the search for the genetic basis of Huntington's). I said that if I had been scientifically minded, I would probably have pursued a career in genetics. The doctor said it could be argued that, by becoming a #genealogist, in a sense I did exactly that. Hadn't thought of it that way. I just ended up studying how genes are passed down rather than how they go wrong. #genealogy #geneadons #dna

Story time (and probably over sharing): I am super English. Like, all of the DNA tests (Ancestry, 23andMe, etc) basically say "You're English AF." Since then, I have been able to trace family history back to maybe the 9th Century Viking invasions from basically Denmark (Ubba's Great Heathen Army). My ancestors basically immigrated in the 17th century for religious freedom to Virginia. 23andMe likes to tell me they were Central Appalachian Mountains Colonial Americans. Before learning all of that, because of not knowing my father's side of the family and having a French surname, we always thought I was pretty French. So, in high school and into college, I was a bit of a Francophile. Probably just not understanding where I came from, plus a love of history. I took French in college. I learned a ton, but never became fluent. I can read and understand a lot of it, but I'm shit at writing it. There's never been a need for it in my life, so any use felt forced. It isn't useless, just hasn't been useful to me. Lately, I have been thinking German might've been the smarter route. So many people I interact with are German. A lot of my favorite artists are German (I listen to a lot of Acid Techno and Power Metal). Watching Easy German videos now. Not sure if I will commit but thinking about it. Lets just say I really appreciate my Deutsch friends. #LanguageLearning #German #DeutschLernen #Genealogy

For anyone interested in a mystery. My original American ancestor was named M. Nicar and he immigrated to Norfolk, VA in the late 18th century from Heidelberg, Germany. This is the puzzle. The surname is very rare in the United States and none of us researching it have any idea of where M was originally from because Nicar is not German or Austrian. He's not Asian or Black. I'd like to know if anyone in Europe, Middle East, South America, Central America, or North Africa have had any contact with this surname and its possible connection to Germany.
