Zum #DigitalIndependenceDay am Sonntag habe ich heute endlich den Browser "im Büro" auf #Ecosia als Standardsuchmaschine umgestellt. Für Notfälle habe ich immer noch "#Google ohne KI" hinter einem Schlüsselwort hinterlegt, aber der Großteil der Anfragen ist sicher auch problemlos über Ecosia möglich. Privat nutze ich Ecosia schon lange, greife in Härtefällen aber immer wieder auf Google zurück. Zudem ist #GoogleBooks gefühlt alternativlos (wenn auch teilweise im @internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org gespiegelt). Was nutzt ihr so zum Suchen?

Today's (quite belated) #grandma recording mainly talked again about her aunt Sophie https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-54, for whom grandma was working during her mandatory social year, when Sophie learned that her husband had died in #WorldWar2 in August 1944. It completely crushed her aunt: She cried for the whole winter. Grandma still got furious about her, when she told me about those days. Grandma got worried about getting married herself one day. She swore herself, that she won't react like this, should she ever be in Sophie's situation. On a previous recording, she had already told me, that grandma didn't, when her husband passed away as well.

Even before the death of her husband, Sophie didn't have it easy. Their marriage apparently was annulled and they had to redo it two years later, because somebody had figured out about their blood-relationship. Before getting married with that husband, she was engaged to somebody, who lost his live a few days before the wedding.

Another story from today's recording, another recurring one, was the one of grandma's spinning wheel, which somehow ended up in the home of her sister, even though that one "didn't know how to spin ... or to swim .. and a driver's license, she also never had."

Since the next recording turned out to be only myself summarizing a phone call I had with her, this recording concludes January 2023. The last January of her life. 380 recordings done, 120 to go.

@adventure_tense@mapstodon.space One thing I love at WikiTree, is that you don't get suggestions about potential connections rubbed in your face (apart from the duplicate check, when creating profiles and a duplicate finder for more advanced users). That clearly reduces the chance of people brainlessly merging different people or attaching sources, just because they popped up and the names sound similar.

I completed transcribing the almost 1 hour long #grandma recording today. One part contained her telling that she saw St. Petersburg (Russia), Finland, Sweden,, Norway, England, Scotland and France and that she is happy, with what she saw during her life (and with her life in general, despite all the hardships). It's always inspiring to be able to listen to that. I hope, I will be able to take a bit of that optimism with me, for when I'm older.

Today, the #grandma recordings were a real struggle, I'm tired and sweating, my neck itches from small hairs after having my hair cut some minutes ago. The first record was only three minutes and not particularly special. The second one revisited the story of Kunigunde #Schindler's revolver (see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Schindler-1413#Revolver for details). I stopped after the mandatory about 100 lines, because the second recording is almost an hour long. Let's hope next week gets better again.

Edit: Probably, wanting to continue watching #MoneyHeist didn't help either 😉

@splitbrain@fedi.splitbrain.org Some years ago, during my first #ConnectAThon at #WikiTree, where you basically sit at the PC from Friday 2 PM until Monday 2 PM, I decided that I can't sit at the PC all the time (which was kinda weird, because it's not like I didn't do that before ...). So I decided, that I will pretend to have a dog and take three walks with it per day. It felt good and I kept it up (although the frequency somehow decreased to two times per day after my COVID infection two years ago). Like this, there is no poor dog sitting at home all day and it won't pee on the floor, if I decide to walk two hours later. Also, nobody sees its poo 😉

- saw documentation of dispensation my great-grandparents received when they got married in 1926 as second cousins: it was justified with them living in a small place and advanced age for marriage - she was 31, he was 39.
- me and my imaginary dog didn't get as wet on our evening walk as we did yesterday

- saw the dispensation from church for great-grandparents' wedding: justification for marrying their second cousin was "small place" and "woman is rather old"

- started a political discussion with a younger person that might turn interesting in the next days
- found a source that kind of proves the origin of my 9th great-grandmother Maria Bank https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bank-311, which allowed me to create her father and also connect that one to her brother Gallus Bank, my 8h great-grandfather on another line
- had an unexpected encounter with an old friend

Bonus: Schnitzel with napkin dumplings at the company restaurant was good.

Today's belated #grandma recording contained the first mention grandma's grandma's photo album. She said, it's still in family possession, but when I asked the relative, whose mother reportedly still had it, he told me, that there is no album that matches the description. What a pity, because it apparently contained the only photo of painter Frank #Buchser, the reported father of grandma's grandma. It would have been a tiny bit of proof rather than stories and love letters, that were burnt out of respect for he dead. 😭

I really really enjoyed the first two seasons of #XOKitty in the last days, but so far #XOKittySaison3 is really annoying with so many "villains" and difficult situations. It feels like the show lost something. It's still far from the train wreck of #SexEducation season 4, but still a bit annoying to watch at times.

Yet another very belated #grandma recording. Key take-away is probably, that she told the story, on how her dad hit someone with a garden fence post (probably a drunken fight that got out of control) and that one lost his eye/sight. Then grandma says, that she told her sister, that children often pay for their parents' sins. Grandma had sight problems for more than the last decade of her life …

After spending nearly the whole #April2026ConnectAThon in #Münstertal, I had to type the words Obermünstertal and Untermünstertal A LOT. Only now, two weeks later, I remembered that I could add the shortcuts "omt" and "umt" into the Auto Text Expander browser extension. That would have saved soooo many keystrokes. But it will save them now! Let's hope there are not that many words containing "omt" or "umt" ...

So richtig schlau werde ich aus dem Wikipedia-Artikel zu letzterem aber nicht. Wie böse ist #Carrageen denn jetzt wirklich?

Heute erster Einkauf mit der #Yuka-App: Einfach den EAN-Code vom Produkt zu scannen und eine Ampelbewertung dafür zu bekommen, ist schon deutlich komfortabler, als alles selbst zu vergleichen. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, dass #Exquisa Balance deutlich besser abschneidet, als #Philadelphia Balance und dass nur die Riegel von #yfood halbwegs in Ordnung sind (abgesehen von Salty Caramel), die Konkurrenz aber deutlich schlechter bewertet wird.

Ein paar französische Passagen sind leider nur mit Untertiteln, was das reine Hörerlebnis etwas einschränkt, aber insgesamt: absolute Empfehlung!

Today's very belated #grandma recording showed how quick-witted ("schlagfertig") her Marie Schindler grandma had been. Once, people from town-hall asked her, what she feeds the chickens (it was post-war time and resources were scarce). She swiftly replied: "I double their wage, but for the food, they must look after by themselves".

Why listening to the recording, I discovered, that the forester which employed Marie as a maidservant, actually was married to a sister of Marie's grandfather (it's ok, if you're lost now). I had always wondered, how exactly she ended up at the job, but the connection now explains it, I guess.

The recording from February 2022 ended with her telling that now it looks ugly with a war, asking me, what I think. Who would have thought, that now, over four years later and with grandma dead for two and half years, this stupid war in #Ukraine would still be ongoing.
