Neill, volto noto del grande schermo degli anni ’90, aveva 78 anni e di recente aveva raccontato di essere guarito dal cancro che gli era stato diagnosticato nel 2022.
Nato nel 1947 a Omagh, nell’Irlanda del Nord, da madre inglese e padre neozelandese in servizio nell’esercito britannico, si trasferì con la famiglia in Nuova Zelanda nel 1954. Qui scoprì la sua passione per la recitazione, partecipando a diverse produzioni dell’Università di Canterbury. Il suo talento lo portò ben presto a trasferirsi a Wellington per unirsi al Downstage Theatre.
Successivamente, dopo aver ottenuto alcuni piccoli ruoli nelle televisioni locali, è arriva la svolta della sua carriera. Nel 1977 prende parte a “Sleeping Dogs”, il primo film neozelandese a uscire negli Stati Uniti, dove catturò l’attenzione di Hollywood.
Ma è il ’93 l’anno in cui la star neozelandese guadagnò definitivamente la fama internazionale grazie a due interpretazioni che lo hanno portato nell’Olimpo del cinema statunitense: quella del colono neozelandese Alisdair Stewart nel film premio Oscar “Lezioni di piano” di Jane Campion e quella del dottor Alan Grant in “Jurassic Park” di Steven Spielberg, ruolo originariamente offerto a Harrison Ford. Un ruolo, quello di Grant, che riprese anche nei sequel “Jurassic Park III” e “Jurassic World Dominion”.
