HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (2016) Charity Screening on Saturday 25 July 4pm

  • We will be donating 50% of ticket sales to PAHU BARK as a tribute to Sam Neill. He was an enthusiastic animal lover and advocate for the protection of Aotearoa’s wilderness. We feel that he would really love this!

A film by Taika Waititi. Based on the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump, Hunt for the Wilderpeople tells the story of Ricky (Julian Dennison), a defiant young city kid who finds himself on the run with his cantankerous foster uncle (Sam Neill) in the New Zealand bush. A national manhunt ensues, forcing the pair to put aside their differences and work together. PAHU BARK is a nonprofit based in Ferry Landing, New Zealand. Dedicated to helping dogs. The founder also trains her own pound rescues in conservation mahi. They organise weekly micro-donations to support various animal rescues across the country. Thank you to madmanfilmsnz for their support for this event.

COME EARLY! Doors 3pm, pre-show 3:30pm

#SamNeill dies at last in a beam of heavenly light, saying "Nazarene...you have won...NOTHING" and then expiring as the choral music soars in an attempt to convey that something triumphant has happened. Thus ends The Omen III: The Final Conflict, which dares to suggest that the Second Coming happened back in 1981 and nobody noticed

In Sam Neill's 2023 memoir, he ripped into his old Christchurch alma mater Christ's College and elite education in general. He said many of the students at the boarding house were the “product of generations of inbreeding”. “Canterbury farming families, for some reason, like to marry among their own. The gene pool is very small. You would think that a cursory examination of how they bred their Corriedale sheep would’ve been helpful in this regard. Sadly, no.” Sam lived by his convictions. While he could have afforded any level of private schooling, his daughter was in my son's class at Queenstown Primary. We've lost a damned fine man. https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/361005947/school-sam-neill-once-said-was-full-inbreds-pays-tribute-distinguished-old-boy #SamNeill #NZ #Education

I can't stop crying about the death of #SamNeill I think what is making this even more upsetting is the fact that Trump still has a pulse, but Sam is dead. Further proof, were it needed, that there is no god, no benevolent being, no nothing. There's nothing. If there were something, it would be the other way round.

Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park is a major incarnation of what I'm gonna call the Middle Class Knowledge Worker Competency Mythology Hero. We'll call him McKnowhe for short. Dr. McKnowhe isn't the strongest or toughest hero, and he isn't rich. But he's quick thinking, fast on his feat, and a walking encyclopedia about his field & probably a few other things. Like the Doctor, he's as likely to run as fight, but when he fights, he fights smart. #mcknowhe #alangrant #jurassicpark #samneill

Replying to @jack@xeno.glyphpress.com

Some other things about the heroic archetype McKnowhe:

  • He's rugged but compassionate. He'll totally hug a triceratops.
  • He doesn't immediately seem like he'd be good with kids, but he's actually great with them.
  • He has little patience for dumb rich people. He'd probably hate Bruce Wayne if they ever met.
  • His courage is powered by having a plan & keeping your head, not testosterone.
