yahoo news | Laura Dern Under Fire Over New Jeffrey Epstein Series: ‘Horrible Idea’
Laura Dern is set to star in a new limited series that dramatizes the downfall of Jeffrey Epstein, portraying investigative journalist Julie K. Brown, whose reporting for the Miami Herald exposed the “sweetheart deal” the financier received and helped bring both Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell to justice. The untitled series, being developed by Sony Pictures Television, is based on Brown’s non‑fiction book *Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story* and will be written by “House of Cards” screenwriter Sharon Hoffman, who will also serve as co‑showrunner and executive producer alongside Eileen Myers, with Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries producing.
The announcement sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with many users calling the project “a horrible idea” and accusing Hollywood of capitalizing on victims’ trauma rather than pursuing further prosecutions. Detractors argued that a dramatization could trivialize the heinous crimes and questioned the accuracy of a show produced by those connected to Epstein’s circle, likening it to “the Nazi party handling a Hitler biography.” At the same time, some commenters defended the series, noting that centering the narrative on Brown’s investigative work rather than on Epstein himself is a thoughtful creative choice and that Dern’s involvement could lend the heavy subject matter the gravitas it needs to become a powerful adaptation.
The controversy emerges alongside new developments in the Epstein case, including a reported $72.5 million settlement from Bank of America to Epstein’s victims. Epstein, who was initially convicted on Florida state charges in 2008 and later received a highly criticized plea agreement that limited federal prosecution, was arrested again in 2019 on sex‑trafficking charges before dying in custody. His former associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, is currently serving a 20‑year sentence for her role in the trafficking ring. The forthcoming series aims to recount these events through the lens of Brown’s journalism, which many see as the most critical element of the story.
