Create Goals Around Consistency During Busy Seasons 🎯 Busy seasons are a normal part of life, but they don’t have to become setbacks to your fitness journey. The people who make the greatest long-term progress aren’t those with perfect schedules, they’re the ones who adapt while staying consistent. #goals #goalsetting #weightlifting #exercise #onlinecoach

Do people realize the latest evidence still suggests #exercise is about as effective as #psychotherapy and #antidepressants for treating #depression (and may result in fewer adverse events)? What's wrong with fitness trackers? Sahar Bakr has been researching them for a decade & has concluded: they over-emphasise steps as the route to fitness; they suck the joy out of exercise; the focus on more-is-more can lead to harm from over-exercise; they are designed for a 'default user' who does not exist; and... they blame the user when things go wrong. To which I would add: they also undermine the sociality of communal/group exercise. #exercise #technology https://theconversation.com/five-hidden-pitfalls-of-fitness-tracking-284892

A half-day of nonstop locks is a workout for my glutes and shoulders. Glutes must get a workout when I use my legs to push open a lock gate that doesn't really want to budge yet. I could wait a bit longer for the lock to fill, but when you have 20+ locks to do, I apply "let's get this over with" tactics. Shoulders must get a workout when I wind paddles up and down. #CanalLife #canal #lock #exercise #BoatingLife #boating #BoatLife #boat #narrowboat #UK

Such a lovely morning & early afternoon. My friend & I ended up taking the longest walk of almost 9km today, wandering around first Wodonga Creek & then the Murray River. Took us about 2hrs all up & even though we carried our umbrellas with us, the rain stayed away. Our feet got pretty wet though, but that’s no big deal. I was feeling it behind the knees by the end, but I’ve pulled up ok since. Then I took a side trip on the way home to my sisters to say goodbye to my niece & her husband until next time. They’d like me to go to Perth to visit them, but it’s an expensive trip. One day maybe. I’ve been home for a few hours just puddling & chilling. Now the rain has come & given us a good soaking. #RiverWalk #Exercise #LoveMyWalks. #Mosstodon

Strava killed its free API, so I built my own fitness platform with Endurain and FitPub instead

“Strava has been a big part of my fitness workflow for one big reason. I don’t really care about leaderboards or social features, but it acts as a great hub between devices, apps, and services. I use an Apple Watch and I also use a Garmin, and Strava lets me bridge all of these together. That setup has become a lot harder to maintain after Strava removed access to its free API tier for most consumer use cases. Since I also dabble in a range of other wearables that don’t really sync directly, this has understandably made it harder than I expected to get my fitness data synced to a common place. That pushed me to look for alternatives.” Strava has been incredibly useful to so many athletes, but that reason is because there is a mass of users using it (ever tried getting someone to leave Facebook for Nostr?) and it has a good API allowing more crowdsourcing of data from other apps. But we are all on borrowed time with Strava as it is a proprietary platform and is apparently filing for an IPO soon (remember when Facebook had open APIs to embrace all the 3rd party networks, and then starting shutting that access down?). So we don’t know the full implications of this yet, but Strava will become more restrictive as things go forward. As the linked article points out, you could self-host Endurain for similar stats for yourself, but if you are into sharing exercise stats, wanting to see similar stats, and following friends, then FitPub does look pretty good (see fitpub.social/timeline). But, of course, like with Facebook, your own friends won’t be on it! If they are anywhere on the Fediverse though, which uses ActivityPub protocol, then they can still follow you. The challenge is to get your exercise data in easily (no complicated file syncing etc). From what I see on Pebble watches you could use an app called GadgetBridge, Garmin users are best off as Endurain natively syncs with that service, Polar uses could sync to intervals.icu and there are hooks to then pull into FitPub. Apple users may be able to use Ride Journal which can sync to FitPub. The post mentioning the Strava API changes is at forum.intervals.icu/t/strava-a…. Man. Again. I cannot believe how good I feel, even after a short jog. I did 35 minutes of cardio on the treadmill today, only 15% of which was jogging. I hated every second of the running. But I feel like a million bucks this afternoon. Dang it. #Exercise #Running #WeightLoss #Fitness

Since completing my Conqueror Challenge, I've been looking at alternative apps that gamify walking as the primary trigger. This is #Prado - it turns your steps into, well, turns, in an #RPG card-based game. Adventure/Quest decks can be mostly combat or mostly foraging/gathering. Between decks, you can craft gear and consumables, rest at the tavern, change class etc. And it's free, with clear upgrade prices. #apps #walking #exercise #PradoTraveler
