@aks@scalie.zone for transparency, there are some things I personally disagree with this article:
This saddens me because the miscommunication was preventable
I disagree, and I explained why in the article. At the beginning, I would say, I was very calm and straight to the point. I was reiterating the same thing but that kept getting dodged. Even before that, there were multiple conversations with the packager but that never went anywhere. I also write the following in the article:
you have two choices:
- You kindly ask, and nothing happens apart from your own time and energy getting wasted for a considerable amount of time, with constant red herring or silence.
- You start acting like a ‘dick’, and now they use this as an excuse to no longer communicate with you, all the while still refusing to address the underlying issue.
And I stand by this.
Secondly, Nate suggests to set up a bot. No, the #1 thing people hate with asking for support is having a bot sharing garbage information and not being able to talk to a person. This is no different and is inherently inhumane. Additionally, the maintainers have to put on the responsibility to keep the bot updated to make sure that the message is being communicated properly, and regularly update.
Edit: I checked the definition of "inhumane" and I realized that this was not the word I was looking for. The word I am looking for is one that describes as "there's no human interaction involved" (in a negative connotation)

I read a little bit of My Accessibility Stack and the future on Wayland, but I personally couldn't continue. I got pissed specifically here:
And this response from a GTK maintainer in a thread discussing Talon (which is not mentioned by name) who refuses to engage with the discussion, refers to us as “accessibility maximalists”, and refers to resources that are not topical to the point at hand (again, this is about input, not output).
The reason I'm really pissed about is because that is not at all that was said. If we actually read the linked comment from said GTK maintainer (Matthias):
Accessibility-focused people tend to come with maximalist lists of demands ("We need to have all these very intrusive capabilities, or the system will not be accessible at all").
As written, "maximalist lists of demands", not "accessibility maximalists". And to be honest, I do agree with Matthias. It's not uncommon to find accessibility-focused people asking to turn Wayland into a free-for-all protocol like X11. This is indeed a maximalist list of demands in the sense that it is unscalable because we'd essentially be turning it into abandonware with extra steps. This is, however, not calling accessibility-focused people out as "accessibility maximalists".
Still though, it hurts to read these kinds of articles. While I do believe that those who don't actively need accessibility features (including myself) should absolutely be more sympathetic towards those who do need them, I would really appreciate to have that kind of sympathetic feeling in return towards those who actually put in the work to make software as accessible as possible.
Accessibility is hard whether you rely on features or not; my needs are different than yours, and yours are different than others', so doing the research and inquiries to understand how someone else uses their computer demands exponentially more energy, arguably even tenfold. This is why we absolutely need people to engage.
Then:
What it tells me is that Wayland as an ecosystem demands our participation, yet makes said participation either impossible (“oh, you’re an accessibility maximalist, I don’t need to listen to you”) or requiring multiple years of full-time work to move the needle ever so slightly forward (see: any major Wayland protocol written in the last five years).
Ignoring "accessibility maximalist" as it was addressed above, I will quote Matthias again:
I don't feel like answering this point-by-point.
This is simply because there is way too much to go through, that asking someone to make a list of accessibility improvements would literally ask them to write these lists for several hours for a couple of days. Matthias also refers to some information about them later.
This section I wrote last year, It’s True, “We” Don’t Care About Accessibility on Linux § It All Trickles Down to “GNOME Bad” applies here. The moment GNOME was painted in a bad light, people just started attacking GNOME, but yet "accidentally" ignored about the accessibility work and funding.
This goes without saying: I can't blame the author for misinterpreting it. It's just upsetting that it happened in the first place, and it has negatively tainted my perception of the article so much that I can't even read the rest of the article.
(And before people jump at me and point out that I completely missed the point: no, I didn't, that was essentially the point of the section.)

In GNOME Calendar, someone started submitting large merge requests that were clearly generated by artificial intelligence:
- https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-calendar/-/merge_requests/786
- https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-calendar/-/merge_requests/787
We introduced the label "Probabilistically Automated" to tag slop. It reads the following:
"Major or total reliance on artificial “intelligence” to generate code. Usually accompanied by a lack of proper testing, and finalizing patches based on theoretical intended behavior rather than correctness of code."
I went ahead and closed all three merge requests. Coincidentally, the amount of opened merge requests went down to 69

LLMs and AI are notoriously problematic in free and open-source software, so we've added an explicit anti-LLM clause to GNOME Calendar:

6 months ago, @paulbiggar@hachyderm.io posted on Zed's GitHub Discussions forums about the company, Zed Industries, taking money from Sequoia Capital, which is partnered with Shaun Maguire, who has been actively supporting genocide in Palestine.
During these six months, Zed Industries has been ominously quiet about the post; however, until a few days ago, one of the maintainers of Zed made an official comment, which I quote: "Thanks for reaching out. We want to better support our community, and the best way for us to do that is through our official Discord. The team is active there and happy to help."

Hey, I've been under distress lately due to personal circumstances that are outside my control. I can't find a permanent job that allows me to function, I'm not eligible for government benefits, my grant proposals got rejected, paid internships are quite difficult to find. Essentially, I have no stable monthly income that allows me to sustain myself.
Nowadays, I work mostly on accessibility throughout GNOME as a volunteer, improving the experience of people with disabilities. I helped make the majority of GNOME Calendar accessible with a keyboard and screen reader — still an ongoing effort with !564 and !598 —which is an effort no company ever contributed financially. These merge requests take thousands (literally) of hours to research, develop, and test, which would have been enough to sustain myself for a couple of years if I had been working under a salary.
I would really appreciate any kinds of donations, especially ones that happen periodically to bump my monthly income.
These donations will allow me to sustain myself while allowing me to continue working on accessibility throughout GNOME, potentially even 'crowdfunding' development without doing it on the behalf of the Foundation.
I accept donations through the following platforms:
- “TheEvilSkeleton” on Liberapay: https://liberapay.com/TheEvilSkeleton/donate (free and open-source platform)
- “TheEvilSkeleton” on Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/theevilskeleton
- “TheEvilSkeleton” on GitHub Sponsors: https://github.com/sponsors/TheEvilSkeleton
Boosts welcome and appreciated.

If you are not yet convinced that Fedora Flatpaks is a hostile 'alternative' to Flathub, here's a good one for you:
An indeterminate amount of their packages are, in fact, directly based on existing manifests from Flathub. Not by manually inspecting code themselves; rather, by running a script which goes through Flathub's APIs and parses the respective apps' manifest to generate manifests for Fedora Flatpaks: https://pagure.io/flatpak-module-tools/blob/859e5bbb655a79e3b2b9ad61650624f833fd103e/f/flatpak_module_tools/flatpak_generator.py#_100

One thing I never expected about software development is how different contributing to an external free and open-source (FOSS) project is from maintaining a FOSS project. I thought they were similar, but they're not.
I get exhausted very quickly from constantly reading and reviewing code, as there are still many things I don't know about programming. Having to learn while I'm reviewing hits like a truck at 69420 KM/h. It also doesn't help that I feel pressured not to keep contributors waiting (not in the sense that contributors pressure me) when I'm busy IRL or want to work on something else.
Contributing code, on the other hand, is often as simple as sending a small patch, having it reviewed, addressing some issues and sometimes asking a few questions on how to address them, and you're done. Of course, it depends on what you contribute, as large patches can take a long time to be merged, but I enjoy contributing to external projects more than maintaining them.
Really, maintaining a FOSS project is time consuming and feels like a job - a job that doesn't pay you. I genuinely appreciate developers who continuously maintain code without getting paid the amount they deserve.
