I just *rescued* a “free” new-looking crockpot from the day of rain. Some neighbor on our street left it on the sidewalk for someone to take it. Now we have to find a space for it in the kitchen, but I’ve been thinking about buying one for a long time. Hopefully it will work once it completely dries out. 🤞 I just hate shiny useful things going into the landfill. ♻️ #reuse #RainyDay

I'm old enough that I experienced glass soda bottles being a regular thing to return to the store to get the deposit back. But according to this report, wine buyers need to be trained to not recycle this bottle, but to bring it back to the store (there's no deposit return, apparently, but they get "points" at the grocery store). #Wine #Reuse #Oregon

Linux microblog update: ProxMox (or maybe my network hardware) does not like when I swap harddrives onto different motherboards (and therefore different ethernet cards with new MAC addresses.) I do this anyway because used old Dell Optiplexes tend to be... used...and old, and it can be a bit...dynamic...adding additonal storage to them. Luckily reinstalling a ProxMox node from my USB key is quick, and now the node thinks it was born with this motherboard and ethernet card. #linux #microblog #proxmox #dell #optiplex #reduce #reuse #recycle

Time to refresh the home lab NAS since I don't think HDD prices are getting better anytime soon and my current NAS is 6 or 7 years old. I found some used disks for $25/TB which, at current rates, is pretty good. This also lets me move away from Synology and I'm probably going with TrueNAS this time around with new hardware for the primary system.

#goodnews #Berlin #kiel #reuse

Okay #DIY and #solar folks. I have a hairbrained idea to re-purpose an old dishwasher circulation pump for a #garden pump to pair with my rainwater catchment system. But I'm a novice when it comes to #electricity and calculating loads. How would I even go about powering the pump once it's removed, and testing it to see how much power it draws so I know what kind of solar panel and battery I'd even need? #solarpunk #gardening #reuse

You've probably got an old phone gathering dust in a drawer somewhere. You meant to get it fixed. But repairing it was too expensive, too difficult, or simply impossible. That’s not an accident. Companies like Apple and Samsung profit when we don’t repair and buy new instead. While mountains of electronic waste continue to grow, we pay the price. Right now, the EU is working on a new law to tackle this mountain of waste. It's called the Circular Economy Act. Done right, it would mean products built to last, and repair that’s easy and affordable. But there's a problem. Right now, the plans are all about recycling, and almost nothing about repair and reuse. That suits the industry fine: they'd rather you give up on your old phone and buy a new one. We can still turn this around, the law is being written as we speak. But only if enough of us raise our voices now. https://action.wemove.eu/sign/2026-05-circular-economy-petition-EN?akid=s8491484..vMeQmr #repair #reuse #repairReuseRecycle #environment

This scaffolding wood bench is a nice example of re-use. Friends of mine had these pieces of wool laying unused and asked me if I could do anything with them. Taking into account the size and the tools I had available a garden bench seemed the perfect solution. The connection between the legs and seat is a box joint, where the teeth are as wide as boards are thick. For extra stability I added a ledger, fixed with a through mortise and tenon. #reuse #upcycling #woodworking #gardenbench

Update. Here's a great example of reusing older #data, this time for the original purpose. Scientists retrieved unpublished data from the 1977 "Wow!" signal captured by the #Arecibo radio telescope as part of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (#SETI), reanalyzed it with modern tools, and improved our understanding of where it came from and what might have caused it.

Update. This article in Nature makes the case that reusing #OpenData for new purposes is a good solution for "cash-strapped and early-career researchers" who don't have the means to generate their own. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-00434-x True enough. But it undervalues the utility of past data for all relevant new projects, even well-funded new projects. The present thread gives some examples. Open data are not only, and not even primarily, for the indigent. They're for the savvy, those who notice their relevance, regardless of means. #Data #ECR #Funding #OpenScience #Reuse #ScholComm

Update. Here's a great opportunity to #reuse older #data for contemporary #climate research. "An archive of over 1,600 sets of meteorological, magnetic and tidal observations taken from 1706-1915 from across the globe has been digitised for the first time." https://royalsociety.org/news/2026/06/historic-weather-data-archive/ #Digitization #RoyalSociety

Update. Here's a good example of the #reuse of older #data in #psychology and #linguistics. "Highly gendered languages are linked to larger personality differences between men and women." https://www.psypost.org/highly-gendered-languages-are-linked-to-larger-personality-differences-between-men-and-women/ From co-author Roxana Hofmann: "We wanted to highlight how grateful we are for all the people who made the data public, which allowed us to test our research question. This included the anonymized personality trait data assessed across multiple countries, language typologies from the World Atlas of Language Structures, and also pretrained word embeddings that allowed us to estimate the gender association of words across multiple languages." Despite this, the authors chose to publish in a paywalled journal. https://psycnet.apa.org/doi/10.1037/pspp0000600 #OpenData #OpenScience

Fun story: @Jillianmarisa@vmst.io and I used this cheap edging at our old place. We decided we didn’t like it. It’s wavy if your yard isn’t perfectly level-whose isn’t? Also, plastic is dumb. We used it all, had no plans for more. Then kid 1 and I volunteered at a river cleanup. Our team fished a whole roll of it out of the Missouri River 😑. Rather than landfill it, here we are. #reuse #MissouriRiverRelief #MissouriRiver

Install VLC, log out of iTunes, copy MP3 files and playlists to VLC via USB or VLC-wifi, cell and wifi off, enjoy. Runs old iOS but radios off, so who cares. Bluetooth 4.2 just works better than most modern BT5.X systems. 3.5mm jack for wired headphones. 16GB or more storage. 4 oz. e-waste in a drawer to tunes in my pocket.👍
