To get to Rinkeby and Drottningholm, I used public transport. The underground train system was easy to understand and use, and the trains were clean and comfortable. Using the bus was a little more challenging, but the transportation workers were happy to help me. Individual tickets were not cheap, and concessions to the elderly and young notwithstanding, I wondered how big of an expense commuting is for those working in Stockholm.
SL, the transportation authority for the city, makes much of the public art in the underground stations. I did not go to enough stations to take in this part of the system. I did, however, get the impression that less of the wall space in the system is covered with advertising compared to the Underground in London or the Metro in Paris. That fleeting impression of mine could be mistaken though.
Even though I did not use it much, I was glad to see that Stockholm has an efficient and comprehensive public transport system.
How much of a problem is car use in Stockholm? How many people in Stockholm and Sweden in general have fallen under the malign spell of the oversized US style SUV?

Although my hotel in Stockholm was near the Central Station, and thus convenient for those times I did use public transport, I chose to get to the places I wanted to see by walking, always the best way to see a city.
The joy of being amongst others in streets, squares, and gardens, of passing shop windows, signs on buildings telling a little of their history, crowded bars offering "after work" specials, abundant public seating in parks and places over looking the water, doorways, architectural details, public art...I was particularly taken with this fountain in the Östermalm district. It dates from 1921 and the sculptor was Carl Eldh, who also created statuary for the garden of the City Hall.
I should sound one cautionary note about getting around in Stockholm. A quick glance at a street map or Google might not be enough to tell you about steep hills and climbs in the city. For example, my visit to the delightful Södermalm district required me to ascend some long and steep flights of steps. Some visitors will need to plan carefully with these relief challenges in mind.

The City Hall of Stockholm boasts some magnificent interiors, through which the official guides will shepherd you while providing lots of information about the architecture and decoration of those spaces, the Nobel prize ceremonies that take place there, and the seating of the municipal government.
I wish this official tour could be extended to take in the garden and the exterior of the building. The architecture of the building as a whole and the statuary on and around the hall deserve attention.
The prominence of the City Hall reminded me of the importance of municipal and regional government in Sweden. What could Britain learn from this?

Most of my time in Stockholm was spent in the centre of the city, parts of which seemed very affluent.
Nevertheless, I thought it important to get off the tourist trail and pay a visit to less well off Stockholm; after talking to some Swedes, I decided to go to Rinkeby.
I was only there for a few hours during the day, so my judgements are based on superficial impressions.
As I walked around, it was evident that Rinkeby is a different Sweden from that of the gated waterfront villas at the east of Djurgården. Yet I did not see the signs of urban blight that one might see in a depressed area of the USA : abandoned cars, potholes, endless graffiti, empty buildings, and so on . Lots of seventies low to medium rise apartment blocks, but nothing that appeared horribly substandard . Pretty? No. Prison like?No too!
It's obvious that most of the inhabitants are of African or Middle Eastern heritage, but I did see some European Swedes there too. Oddly enough, Rinkeby was one of the very few places in Stockholm where I caught sight of an election poster for the far right Sweden Democrats.
The budget friendly supermarket Lidl in its underground setting was depressing in the way that Walmart can be in the USA. I did buy a nice bar of hazelnut chocolate there though!
I never felt in the least bit threatened or menaced in Rinkeby. I am a man though, and I was not there at night. Those two factors could well explain how safe I felt in this supposedly crime ridden district.
I need to update my reading on inequalities of wealth and income in Sweden.

I walked for about an hour from the Vasa museum through the island park of Djurgården to the Thiel Gallery:

I cannot recommend a visit to this gallery too highly. Both architecture and the collection of pictures within come together to impress the visitor with a wealthy and informed couple's taste at the dawn of the modern.
I enjoyed a 3:00 PM coffee and cardamom bun there too!

I am particularly interested in the twenties and thirties, so I was delighted to find the Moderna Museet staging both “Brassaï – The Secret Signs of Paris” and "The Subterranean Sky: Surrealism in the Moderna Museet Collection".
I shall have more to say about surrealism, as prompted by this exhibition in a future post.
I could kick myself a hundred times for not handing over a few dollars for "Brassaï -- The Secret Paris of the 30's" at a yard sale.

I mentioned in the previous post that I didn't want to go out to bars in Stockholm at night by myself, nor did sitting alone in a restaurant seem an inviting prospect; perhaps one day I will be in Stockholm in the company of another and will so be ready to enjoy a dinner at Pelikan or Prinsen.
Nevertheless, like just about every other tourist who visits Stockholm, I had to try the Swedish fast food eatery Nystekt Strömming.
The herring platter was delicious!

I made two visits to National Museum at Stockholm and would happily make two thousand more. As i had been expecting, I enjoyed their excellent collection of French paintings from the 18th century as well their works of art from Sweden. This Goya, though, was a delightful and stirring surprise.

I was only too happy to escape the inland furnace of central Texas for the the moderate temperatures of early September Stockholm, with its islands set amidst waters and still enjoying late summer sunshine.
I also rejoiced at spending time in a city with streets brimming with people and activity.Although I am sure work remains to be done on controlling the car in central Stockholm, it is nothing like the car dominated misery that is the reality of all too many US cities.
I only used public transport a couple of times. otherwise walking everywhere. Never being far from water revitalised me, as did the many vistas the city offers to those on foot.

I would never have imagined "Lutheran baroque" until I saw the royal pews inside the Stockhom's Storkrykan, since 1942 (I think) Stockholm's cathedral.
