My daughter who has schizophrenia and some paranoia bought an old and beat up Dell 960 desktop computer without a hard drive on eBay. She wants a legacy computer because she thinks it is more secure than a newer computer and it is pointless to try convincing her otherwise. After reseating the two loose memory cards, I was able to successfully boot up Linux Mint Cinnamon from a USB drive as shown in the attached image. I can access the Linux Mint menu using the Windows key, but for some reason a USB mouse is not working. I am going to try using a dedicated mouse port instead to see if that works. I have attached a photo of two unused cables that I assume are for the missing hard drive. Am I wrong? One of the cables is damaged and I may have to replace it. I am obviously not a hardware guy and am just stumbling my way through this. If I buy a 3.5 Dell SATA hard drive, can I expect it to plug and play (if I replace the damaged cable)? My brother-in-law's laptop stopped working. It's under warranty. So he called #Dell. "Hi! I'm your A.I. assistant. Before I can help you, you have to read me a tiny number from the back of your laptop." He can't read it, he's blind. I read it. The "A.I" has one job. It is very bad at it. I read it out 20 times before the machine got it right. In the middle of this debacle, I asked the "A.I." to put me through to a person. "I can't do that until you read me the number." #Enshittification

Well I gotta say, moving #MastodonAU 's database to a pure SSD storage backend has made a massive difference. Whooohoo, she's much faster! The storage servers are a pair of #Dell R640s, with 2x Gold 6150 (2.7GHz 18 Cores each) and 256GB of RAM. Each one has 8 x 1TB SSDs, in a #ZFS raidz2 pool, and they automatically replicate between themselves. I am doing my best to avoid any more visits from the #fuckup-fairy Now to finish #MastodonNZ

Some mainstream PC hardware manufacturers have computers with pre-installed Linux in their catalogs. Dell started this twenty years ago in 2006. Recently Lenovo has taken even more radical steps towards Linux, mainly for economical and customer satisfaction reasons. 11/21 #linux #dell #lenovo

Linux microblog update: ProxMox (or maybe my network hardware) does not like when I swap harddrives onto different motherboards (and therefore different ethernet cards with new MAC addresses.) I do this anyway because used old Dell Optiplexes tend to be... used...and old, and it can be a bit...dynamic...adding additonal storage to them. Luckily reinstalling a ProxMox node from my USB key is quick, and now the node thinks it was born with this motherboard and ethernet card. #linux #microblog #proxmox #dell #optiplex #reduce #reuse #recycle
