Well I gotta say, moving #MastodonAU 's database to a pure SSD storage backend has made a massive difference. Whooohoo, she's much faster! The storage servers are a pair of #Dell R640s, with 2x Gold 6150 (2.7GHz 18 Cores each) and 256GB of RAM. Each one has 8 x 1TB SSDs, in a #ZFS raidz2 pool, and they automatically replicate between themselves. I am doing my best to avoid any more visits from the #fuckup-fairy Now to finish #MastodonNZ

Some mainstream PC hardware manufacturers have computers with pre-installed Linux in their catalogs. Dell started this twenty years ago in 2006. Recently Lenovo has taken even more radical steps towards Linux, mainly for economical and customer satisfaction reasons. 11/21 #linux #dell #lenovo

Linux microblog update: ProxMox (or maybe my network hardware) does not like when I swap harddrives onto different motherboards (and therefore different ethernet cards with new MAC addresses.) I do this anyway because used old Dell Optiplexes tend to be... used...and old, and it can be a bit...dynamic...adding additonal storage to them. Luckily reinstalling a ProxMox node from my USB key is quick, and now the node thinks it was born with this motherboard and ethernet card. #linux #microblog #proxmox #dell #optiplex #reduce #reuse #recycle

Three advisories from Nvidia today addressing a multitude of vulnerabilities:

Aside: It's interesting that some of the links lead to an Oracle page that's encountering "technical difficulties."

Also, Dell:

Times of India | Quote of the day by Dell founder Michael Dell, "How successful you are is really a function of how well you deal with failure and how much you learn from it." AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The article highlights a quote from Michael Dell—“How successful you are is really a function of how well you deal with failure and how much you learn from it”—and explains why Dell sees handling failure, not talent or timing, as the key driver of lasting success. It outlines how Dell’s own journey—from building computers in his college dorm to leading Dell Technologies through multiple setbacks, strategic pivots, a private‑equity buy‑out, and a public re‑listing—embodies this principle. The piece breaks down Dell’s distinction between “dealing with” failure (emotional and practical resilience) and “learning from” failure (cognitive analysis), warning that resilience without reflection leads to repeated mistakes, while reflection without resilience stalls progress. By framing failure as a structural, not merely inspirational, component of success, the article argues that today’s hyper‑curated narratives of constant achievement obscure the reality that the most innovative individuals and organizations are those that process setbacks efficiently, a lesson especially relevant for founders, leaders, and students navigating today’s fast‑changing landscape. This notebook is driving me nuts. Yesterday I had a #thermald config which gave me a score of 2400 with balanced.

Started the notebook today, can't get any scores over 1500 no matter which profile and I triggered the LEDs again. Which I recorded this time and now know what they say. Not that it is any help.

They were one Amber and 8 times White. Which according to the manual means:

Disconnect all power source (AC, battery, coin cell) and drain flea power by pressing and holding down the power button for 3~5 seconds.

#Unigine is quite helpful because I immediatly see on the lag when the CPU throttles.

#Dell
