#Gaming https://winfuture.de/news,160293.html?utm_source=Mastodon&utm_medium=ManualStatus&utm_campaign=SocialMedia

Stop guessing at barriers. Start reasoning about dependencies.

Vulkan's hardest topic, rebuilt around the modern standard. This series replaces legacy 1.0 barrier soup with vk::DependencyInfo and timeline semaphores, then uses that foundation to architect an engine-grade frame loop.

It's not just #Spectre and #Meltdown — dozens of similar CPU bugs have been discovered since 2018, and they're still being found: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transient_execution_CPU_vulnerability The foundations of modern computing are ricketier than we like to imagine. In the past, I've always bought a decent computer and held on to it for years and years: it saves money and it's the green thing you do. My main machine right now is seven years old and still going strong. Updating the OS and apps is no problem — I run #Linux. But #CPU bugs make me wonder whether I should replace computers more often for security reasons. I really hope not.

Replying to @pertho@mastodon.bsd.cafe
@pertho@mastodon.bsd.cafe @rootwyrm@weird.autos yes and if the sole reason for @OS1337@infosec.space was to use dd & ddrescue on some industrial thingy that runs #MSDOS then yeah that would be fine. I just think that yeeting i486 is wrong cuz #i486 requires way less workarounds than #i386 to work wellCuz yes there are still new machines deployed with i486-only #CPU|s / #SoC|s in #industrial setups!
