Time to refresh the home lab NAS since I don't think HDD prices are getting better anytime soon and my current NAS is 6 or 7 years old. I found some used disks for $25/TB which, at current rates, is pretty good. This also lets me move away from Synology and I'm probably going with TrueNAS this time around with new hardware for the primary system. #homelab #nas #truenas #synology #hardware #hdd #reuse

順便給 Synology NAS 的使用者一個提示，Forgejo 官方的 Docker Image 沒有託管在 Docker Hub 上，而 Synology NAS GUI 似乎沒辦法加入 3rd Container Registry (我卡在這點很久)。後來用 Synology Container Manager 的專案功能搭配 Composer.yml 直接指定 image 路徑就好。 #synology

Meanwhile my decade+ old #synology box just keeps on chugging. Disk 6 is apparently dying but I can lose 2 disks and still be fine on it so I'll just wait it out.

Okay, having utterly failed to find the images / info I need online, I am putting out a request for photos:

Can anyone who owns (or has owned) a Synology DS413 specifically - not DS413J - confirm:

does the DS413 main board have a PCI-Express slot,
if so, what size (1x, 4x, etc.)
if not, by what means is the drive backplane card connected?

If you own one and can take a photo of both sides of the main board, that would also help.

Meh. Seems our trusty old Synology NAS has developed a case of not booting up. Wasn't on my bingo card of things that had to go wrong now, but here we are. And Synology has caught a severe case of late stage US capitalism it doesn't seem to be possible to just take the disks and put them in a newer unit as Synology now requires their own branded and expensive disks. Fucking fuck. We have backups, of course, but restoring somewhere is really annoying. #synology #nas #dystopy

I got an e-mail from #Synology at 01:30 in the morning telling me a critical software upgrade was going to be applied and I had 10 minutes if I wanted to postpone. Is this normal in the world of computers?
