Format a 512e drive to 4096 on Linux I have just received my Seagate 18TB IronWolf Pro HDD and the specs say that the logical sector size is 512 emulated. Moreover, Seagate says that switching to 4096 sector size is as easy as doing a quick format (Windows terminology?). I suppose on Linux this simply means creating a filesystem with that block size? For instance mkfs.ext4 -b 4096 /dev/device or - in my specific case - cryptsetup luksFormat --sector-size=4096 and then creating a file system? What confuses me is the Arch Wiki article on advanced format that has instructions on how to use hdparm to tell the firmware to use a certain sector size. Do I need to do the hdparm thing, which seemingly conflicts with the Seagate instructions?

Time to refresh the home lab NAS since I don't think HDD prices are getting better anytime soon and my current NAS is 6 or 7 years old. I found some used disks for $25/TB which, at current rates, is pretty good. This also lets me move away from Synology and I'm probably going with TrueNAS this time around with new hardware for the primary system. #homelab #nas #truenas #synology #hardware #hdd #reuse

LLM technological advances We need to educate our elderly that many things they see on Walled Gardens, spoken by what looks like people, are in fact just Avatars generated with Large Language Models. These things will: show whatever you like to seesay whatever you like to hear become your personal echo chamberlie and hallucinate, to make you feel Superiorto accomplish that you stay there much longer than normal!!! You are literally the battery that feeds that large language model and thus the Walled Garden These things now look so good, that they are difficult to distinguish from the real thing, a recorded living person, unless you look frame by frame, like I have from time to time. What will tip you off is that they will say exactly what you want to hear, they'll show themselves exactly how you like to see them, they will even sound like the way you want them to do. Many Walled Garden clients have been recording our voices and phrases for years, thus that was easily to accomplish. So not only do these things steal our ability to buy SSDs memory GPUs and APUs for normal prices, they also critically mislead our elderly and those who are LLM computer illiterate.
