Do we have any camera nerds out there? I've got two Nikon 1s (don't snigger, I love them) and they're both unusable at the moment - one has an unpleasantly terminal dark red screen when fired up, the other one objected to me inserting the wireless adapter the other day for the first time in several years and is now insisting that the clock has been reset, but won't let me actually reset it. I haven't got either the money or the desire to replace them (I've got several of the nicer lenses that go with them, for a start), so I'd really like to find some way to repair them, if possible. My old computer chair broke. It was quality, but I just got too heavy for too long for it and it gave up... ... Yesterday I begun looking for a replacement... but today, I flipped it over and took it apart. I decided that it can be repaired. Luckily I knew the secret steampunk shop down the industrial alley that did walk in metalwork, and after 2 minutes of welding and $20... I had a servicable chair again. Felt good to save money and not throw shit onto the rubbish pile too! #Repaircafe #RepairReuseRecycle

Today I had a lovely DIY success: using tools and guides from @iFixit@mastodon.social I successfully replaced the battery in a 4 year old OnePlus 9 Pro which was otherwise in perfect working order. My wife's phone was purchased at the same time and also needs a new battery so I'll do that one tomorrow. We will keep using these phones until the unfixed security vulnerability situation forces us to do something else, although that might be switching to @GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social . The guide said 'moderate' and predicted one hour for the repair, and that was accurate. The second one will take less time of course 😁 #DIY #RepairReuseRecycle

What kind of mask, preferably with changeable filters, should I wear when working with plastic? Cutting, heating and glueing it. And 3d printing. Companies like Apple and Samsung profit when we don’t repair and buy new instead. While mountains of electronic waste continue to grow, we pay the price. Right now, the EU is working on a new law to tackle this mountain of waste. It's called the Circular Economy Act. Done right, it would mean products built to last, and repair that’s easy and affordable. But there's a problem. Right now, the plans are all about recycling, and almost nothing about repair and reuse. That suits the industry fine: they'd rather you give up on your old phone and buy a new one. Have a wheel barrow with one broken handle. The thought occurred that, once I've removed the holding bolts attaching the plastic container to the metal frame... I should be able to replace a bike trailer container. It's a smallish milk crate, will measure the distance and if it fits will do it. Mind you the barrow's bolts are truly rusted and spin around, without coming off. Will report. #photography #smartphone #cycling #trailer #wheelbarrow #RepairReuseRecycle
