💁🏻♀️ TIL: 🌸🌿 #Utrecht University researchers studied drill cores from the #UK and Northwest #Europe to track #wildfires during the end-Triassic #extinction 201 million years ago.
Using a new darkness index on #fossil pollen and a fern-to-fern #fire cycle, they found that #CO2-driven #warming collapsed #forests and let #ferns fuel intense repeated burns for up to 300,000 years. The ferns acted as both disaster colonizers and self-perpetuating wildfire fuel.
