I abuse the word "'genius". Way too flippant with the term, and I'm probably not alone. And then a map takes me back to someone like Alexander Von Humboldt, and I remember when it should be applied. We think of his work on the geography of plants and isothermal maps. But he did a lot for anchoring understanding of the Southwest. Here his great work that influenced Pike and Arrowsmith. I wanted to explore the topographic relief cartographic style that I did for Santorini, Greece, last year¹ and tried it on the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴. One new thing is that I worked with @mapterhorn@mastodon.social terrain tiles instead of processing the raw NASADEM data. I’m continuing experimenting with this topographic map style and here’s one for the French Caribbean island of Saint-Barthélemy. France’s IGN provides DEM with a horizontal resolution of 1 metre so I wondered how my map workflow would look like for smaller islands.
