I just got my first report as an admin that made me break down crying. Background: I action a lot of reports. Most are spam bots, scammers, NCII accounts, some bigots, etc. I'm used to seeing hate speech, shitty hot-takes, and a ton of nonconsensual porn, but this temporarily broke me. A "Gaza News" bot, scraping X, and posting unblurred, un-CW'd images of mutilated kids—just a wall of horrible atrocities. I hate everything about this. #FreeGaza #FuckTwitter #NoBots

Do you think we don't love life? Do you think the people of Gaza were created to die? Do you think we have no feelings? Do you think we are inhuman? This is the image that Zionist ideology tries to paint of the people of Gaza. But I must tell you the truth. We love life. We love every detail of it. We love the morning, the sea, children's laughter, and our simple dreams. Despite the hell we live in, we remain steadfast. We still believe that we are human beings with enough humanity to cling to life, and that we were created to live, not to be exterminated. Gaza City has become one of the most densely populated places in the world, after more than two million people were forced into an area of no more than 100 square kilometers, following the Israeli army's control over nearly 70% of the Gaza Strip, leaving the population crowded into only about 30% of its land. The tragedy does not end with this overwhelming overcrowding. This remaining area is almost completely deprived of every basic necessity for life. Most families are living in worn-out and torn tents, with no electricity, no safe drinking water, no proper sanitation, no functioning hospitals, no medicines or medical treatment, and an extreme shortage of food and clean water. Despite all of this, people continue to endure relentless bombardment, attacks, explosions, and massacres every single moment. Fear, terror, and anxiety have become a constant part of daily life. These massacres do not distinguish between children, women, the elderly, or young people—everyone here is a target. The reality that families are living through in Gaza today is unlike anything else in the world. People wait for death every moment of every day, not because they have lost hope, but because they have been crushed by pain, exhausted by suffering, and consumed by hunger, fear, humiliation, and endless hardship until life itself has become unbearable. Gaza has become a place that is no longer fit for human life. During the seventh displacement from Rafah to Al-Mawasi, where the city was being evacuated in preparation for its later destruction. While praying Fajr in the tent, I heard a strange rustling sound near my books lying on the ground. The rustling intensified, and fear gripped my heart, quickening its rapid beating. I turned my head to the right and then to the left, glancing behind me. It was the first time in my life I had ever seen a real scorpion. Its slimy body gleamed in the light of my phone. At first, I was confused and hesitated to take my next step, until the strange black creature moved toward one of the small openings at the end of the nylon sheeting spread on the ground. I grabbed the book "Paths of Peace," which I had bought from one of the stalls selling books stolen from Rafah school libraries. I took a step forward, raised my arm, my hand gripping the book tightly, and slammed it down on the scorpion, knocking the book onto it. The sudden blow made a loud noise in the tent, like an explosion. My children woke up terrified, while I continued pressing down on the book, my body trembling and a feeling of both fear and disgust washing over me at the sound of the black creature being crushed beneath it. I glanced at my children, still shaken by the explosion, and reassured them, "It's nothing... I killed a cockroach." The children drifted back to sleep, reassured by their father's heroism. I continued pressing down on the peace lines until I was certain there was stillness and no movement. I lifted the book, pleased with the result of the crushing. I went to the opening the scorpion had almost moved towards and shone the light on it, finding two small scorpions. I dealt with them more easily. Then I quietly searched the area, but found no trace of the intrusive creature. In the morning, my daughter Salma boasted about my ability to kill cockroaches, but neither she, nor her siblings, nor their mother know what she found among us that day. I sit now on a broken chair, my laptop resting on my lap. The heat of the device, and the heat of the weather, stings me. In this weather, the tents are ovens cooking the bodies of the displaced. I'm trying to organize my new literary work. My wife calls out to me in an angry tone: "Get up and light the lighter, or buy another one." Ignoring her, I continue writing. The heat stings me, and with it, the impossible demands. A lighter in Gaza is an impossible request?! Yes. The city is now without lighters, and if you find one, its price is almost the same as a gas cylinder in neighboring countries. A friend of mine jokingly messaged me privately, commenting on the episode I was featured on the "Haki Al-Bilad" podcast: "A wonderful and special interview... and while I was engrossed in the conversation, my lighter broke, and now I have to fix it or buy a new one." I texted him back, while my wife's anger grew inside: "Buy me another lighter too." Then I promised my wife I'd go to the market this evening, hoping I could fix it. My friend replied: "I'll buy one for both of us... if the code arrives." For those outside Gaza, to translate the last line: "The code" is a fixed financial allowance sent via a code to the phones of some displaced people as humanitarian aid, approximately once every three months. People here are overjoyed by it, as it might solve, even if only temporarily, one of life's endless problems. By the way, since I was displaced, I haven't received the code even once, for reasons I don't know. And this evening, I have to get a lighter for my family, otherwise we won't be able to light a fire. What can we do? Life is... Are you determined to corner us with details? Very trivial details. Quite ordinary in other countries, but in a war-torn land, they can determine whether dinner will be cooked or not, whether the family will have a cup of tea, or whether they will spend the night waiting for a small miracle called a lighter. We are not absent here, but the truth is that we have exhausted all words. For more than two and a half years, we have been screaming without pause, writing, documenting, and telling everything we have been through, and everything that was taken from us, word by word, in the hope that somewhere in this world there would remain something willing to listen. But nothing changed. The genocide did not stop, the massacres did not stop, the famine did not stop. And here we are today, on the verge of putting down our pens; not because the story has ended, but because the world chose not to read. We wrote the pain, we wrote the loss, we wrote the hunger, we wrote the names of those who left, and we wrote about those who are still waiting for their turn to survive or die. Our cries no longer seem to make an impact, and our words no longer shake anyone’s conscience. Not because our suffering is any less worthy of being told, but because this world has begun to pass over blood as though it were passing news, over famine as though it were a number, and over death as though it were a scene it had grown used to.
