@mlanger@mastodon.world Yes. Numerous locks are closed due to water shortages. Last year CRT closed most of the Midlands with only a week notice. During that week, locks were restricted to a narrow band of hours. There was frantic #boating that week—at 3 miles per hour—as people got their boats to the right places for winter. Last month, as water levels dropped, I could see it coming. I make a 150-mile detour around closed locks to reach the section that has my winter marina. #CRT #stoppage #UK #drought

A lower water level of 2 inches (5cm) made a difference in the middle of the Harecastle tunnel. Even keeping my head down in the dark, I still scraped my raincoat hood on the ceiling. It was 40 minutes in the dark, with that pinpoint of light getting gradually larger. It's hard to estimate the distance. When it looks like 30 seconds to the exit, it's actually still four minutes. Toward the end I took this photo. #CanalLife #canal #BoatLife #boat #BoatingLife #boating #narrowboat #tunnel #CRT

The Net turns 31 years old today. It premiered back in 1995. As such, I treated myself to a re-watch. With how fast technology was moving in 1995, it's not surprising that it doesn't hold up in 2026. Still, It's a great look back. #OTD #Movies #Film #TheNet #SandraBullock #DennisMiller #Analog #CRT #OPSEC #OSINT #InfoSec #Privacy #Surveillance

@aegir@toot.wales Damp, yes. Cooler, yes. In the much deeper cuts, 20 minutes before this photo, much of the towpath was muddy. The walls of the cut are stone, there. Given the drought, where was that water coming from, I wonder? Was it being released by the earth, after 1½ months of dry weather? Or was it leaking from a river, up above? #SUC #CRT #UK #boating #boaty #narrowboat #canal #water #shortage #WaterShortage

Anybody local or willing to be local for pickup and retrocomputery got an interest in an antique Tektronix monitor? It's not multisync in the traditional sense, it's _adjustable_ sync, and you can tune it into a variety of resolutions from the outside using a special plastic tool to adjust internal pots. (My household near UW used it as a gaming monitor circa 2000 or so) (I think it came from Boeing Surplus but don't quote me on that. iirc we mostly ran it at 1024x768.) #retrocomputing #CRT #Tektronix

Decoded to turn right and take the 5×-as-long route because the direct route is closed due to water shortages. Even the Canal and River Trust's own volunteers say CRT is "too reactive" —not even tactical — about managing canal water levels. #CanalLife #BoatLife #BoatingLife #canal #boating #boat #narrowboat #CRT #water #shortage #drought #climate #management

🧵 cont'd … friend on the Peak Forest Canal that the status of the stoppage up there flipped between Closed and Assisted passage, 3× in 2 days, as CRT tries to manage the water levels. A thankless job, no doubt. 💦 The CRT website says water levels are better now than this time last year. I'm ready when you are, CRT. I need 5 minutes to put on my shoes and hat. #CanalRiverTrust #CRT #CanalLife #canal #BoatingLife #boating #BoatLife #boat #narrowboat #water #shortage #drought #climate 🧵/end.

A #CRT isn't the only way to scan a phosphor screen with a particle beam!

You could also use a laser. This avoids most of the problems with CRTs:

  • No heavy envelope or dangerous vacuum. Light isn't blocked by air.
  • No high voltage. Lasers don't need it.
  • No x-ray emissions.
  • Lasers use less power.

Only thing is how do you deflect the beam? Best answer so far: mechanically, with a moving mirror. Sounds pretty fragile.

Still, neat. Retro-futuristic “what's old is new again” vibe.

GunForce II Arcade Irem, 1994 For this #scanlinesunday, a misogynist relic! There are more babes tied to poles in this game than your average Conan the Barbarian fan fiction. Hundreds of babes, tied to poles. The graphics sure are great, though. 🤷‍♀️ #crt #retrogaming

CRT Oscilloscope - Free to a good home I've got an old SELabs SM111 CRT Oscilloscope sitting in my garage which it seems a shame to dump at the tip. It works BUT it doesn't focus, the best you can get is a 1cm wide bar not a thin crisp green line. See pics. However it looks really cool. Again see pics. Anyway if you want it (or know someone who might) and can collect it from Cambridgeshire (it weighs 25lbs) then it's yours. #RetroElectronics #oscilloscopes #crt #AnologElectronics #electronics

Zeratul2099 makes retro gaming videos showing old computer games being played on original hardware through a genuine CRT. You can follow their video account at: ➡️ @zeratul2099@tube.fediverse.games Don't worry if the account looks blank to you, that just means no one from your server follows it yet. If you follow the account its videos will start gradually showing up on your server too. A cast-iron milestone in traditional black-and-white paint, along the New Mainline of the Birmingham Canal Network or BCN. The letters are raised, so can still be read up close, despite the black paint having flaked off. Heading left, or southeast: • Northbrook Street. • Rotton Park Junction. • Gas Street Basin. Heading right, or northwest: • Winson Green Junction. • Rabone Lane. • Galton Valley. #CanalLife #canal #BoatLife #boat #BoatingLife #boating #narrowboat #CRT #UK #milestone #history

I wonder if modern tech could correctly illuminate vertical #RGB phosphor stripes (as in the #Trinitron) on a #CRT with a single electron gun and no shadow mask. This was a Hard Problem™ when color TV was first being invented. The shadow mask and aperture grille were invented to solve the problem by stopping the beams from hitting the wrong color. But now we have gigahertz-speed electronics. Could those modulate the beam with precise enough timing to not need a shadow mask or aperture grille?

Have you ever seen electrons? Watch this! I got an old Narva BR-2 cathode ray tube (Braun'sche Röhre) that was made for educational purposes. It has some Neon gas inside that makes the electron beam visible. The second tube in this video is a voltage regulator OD3A that also "glows" nicely. #electron #CRT #cathoderaytube #electronics #physics #science https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOAEv-jZarM

Okay, the setup is solid now. SCART into the gscart switch which splits the output. One goes to the Sony PVM-2530, the other output goes to the RetroTINK 4K. I tried to get the colors to match somewhat on the CRT, but it's a fool's errand to be honest. However, once work is over it'll be time to progress more in FF6.
