I see that #Microsoft #Windows 11 now sorts apps into categories like “productivity" and “creativity” by default.

How, though? By looking up a numeric category identifier in a 15MB JSON file that comes with Windows. Apps are not allowed to specify their own categories, nor can new categories be defined other than by Microsoft.

Good grief, what absolute nonsense.

#XDG / #FreeDesktop / #GNOME / #KDE had a vastly better solution to this exact problem 20 years ago.
