“Per risolvere la fame nel mondo la prima grande azione da mettere in campo sarebbe soprattutto una: cessare le guerre, perché le guerre sono una delle cause strutturali di fame. Inoltre, gli investimenti in armi tolgono risorse alla lotta alla malnutrizione: oggi i paesi con crisi alimentari gravi sono quelli in situazioni di guerra”. Simone Garroni, Direttore Generale di “Azione Contro la Fame”, commenta così il nuovo Rapporto SOFI (Stato della Sicurezza Alimentare e della Nutrizione nel Mondo), pubblicato da cinque agenzie specializzate delle Nazioni Unite. Nel 2025 sono ancora 645 milioni le persone che soffrono la fame, pari al 7,8% della popolazione mondiale e 2,1 miliardi sono in condizione di insicurezza alimentare da moderata a grave. “E pensare”, continua Garroni, “che basterebbe meno di un decimo di quanto viene spese in armi a livello globale per fermare la fame”.
Quanto incidono i tagli agli aiuti umanitari sulla fame nel mondo?
Il governo Trump ha quasi interamente tagliato i fondi USAID e molti governi occidentali stanno tagliando i fondi per la cooperazione umanitaria e lo sviluppo. Secondo The Lancet, se questi tagli dovessero continuare sono previsti 14 milioni in più di morti per fame e malnutrizione al 2030. Purtroppo, tutto ciò lo tocchiamo con mano, abbiamo dovuto ridurre i nostri interventi in una serie di paesi, in particolare nella Repubblica del Congo e in Somalia. Questi tagli hanno un effetto immediato sulla sopravvivenza dei bambini malnutriti, piuttosto che sulla capacità di generare resilienza agli choc a cui sono esposte queste popolazioni. E il dispiegamento dei tagli sarà ancora maggiore nel 2026 e 2027.

In 2025, 645 million people still suffer from hunger, representing 7.8% of the world’s population, and 2.1 billion are in a state of moderate to severe food insecurity. “And think,” Garroni continues, “that it would be enough less than one tenth of what is spent on weapons globally to end hunger.”
How do cuts to humanitarian aid affect hunger worldwide?
The Trump administration almost completely cut USAID funding and many Western governments are cutting funds for humanitarian cooperation and development. According to The Lancet, if these cuts were to continue, 14 million more deaths from hunger and malnutrition would be expected by 2030. Unfortunately, we feel the effects firsthand; we have had to reduce our interventions in a number of countries, particularly in the Republic of Congo and Somalia. These cuts have an immediate effect on the survival of malnourished children, rather than on the ability to generate resilience to shocks that these populations are exposed to. And the deployment of these cuts will be even greater in 2026 and 2027.
