To end world hunger it would take less than one tenth of the amount spent on weapons. And even in Italy, one in ten people suffers from food insecurity.
To solve world hunger, the first major action to implement would be primarily one: cease wars, because wars are a structural cause of hunger. Furthermore, investments in weapons deprive resources from the fight against malnutrition: today the countries with severe food crises are those in war situations. Simone Garroni, General Director of “Action Against Hunger,” comments thus on the new SOFI Report (State of Food Insecurity and Nutrition in the World), published by five specialized United Nations agencies. In 2025, 645 million people still suffer from hunger, representing 7.8% of the world’s population, and 2.1 billion are in a state of moderate to severe food insecurity. “And think,” Garroni continues, “that it would be enough less than one tenth of what is spent on weapons globally to end hunger.”
How do cuts to humanitarian aid affect hunger worldwide?
The Trump administration almost completely cut USAID funding and many Western governments are cutting funds for humanitarian cooperation and development. According to The Lancet, if these cuts were to continue, 14 million more deaths from hunger and malnutrition would be expected by 2030. Unfortunately, we feel the effects firsthand; we have had to reduce our interventions in a number of countries, particularly in the Republic of Congo and Somalia. These cuts have an immediate effect on the survival of malnourished children, rather than on the ability to generate resilience to shocks that these populations are exposed to. And the deployment of these cuts will be even greater in 2026 and 2027.
