Una de las cosas de jugar Magic que veo, es que indirectamente ejercitan la argumentación, el hacerse entender para explicar porque tal regla de tal criatura, la discusión de las reglas, todo eso me parece notable y que solo pasa con los juegos de rol en general. If #politics won't do the trick ("climate #scientists are all #communists"), they'll resort to #religion ("climate scientists are all atheists"), & if THAT won't do, they'll resort to #magic, & reject the entire #scientific #enterprise, as it has been constructed since the 17th Century.

I know this is weird, but it's also quintessentially Mastodon, because I need to tap the minds of a strange mix of chaos magicians, crypto-wiccans, math nerds, autists, artists, computer programmers, conlang enthusiasts, and general muckrakers. Does anybody know of a good way to generate your own "Magic Circles", sorta like the one below? I am working on my next tattoo design and I want to convey a bunch of information, densely packed in a way I can understand it and explain it to people when I show it to them... ...but I also don't want to accidentally curse myself or bind my right arm to some ancient lost deity because it just so happens that I accidentally recreated their exact sigils and signs. I've looked online and there are a few "generators" but they seem to be an equal mix of random garbage and broken jank. Any recommendations for... programs I could use to map one out, I guess? #art #magic #graphicdesign #tattoo #circles

🖤 It's happening! Finally the details are confirmed and I can share this thing I've been working on for a while -- I'll be hosting an Ancestral Sigil Making workshop on Sunday, October 18th at Brewja Elixir in Joshua Tree. We'll be working within a communal setting using a somatic method to pull two sigils: one made by us, that we will burn at the end to leave behind. One made by another attendee as we make theirs to carry ancestral wisdom forward into the season, marked with jagua on our skin. Be prepared to come for the afternoon, settle in, and truly integrate into the experience. If you were looking for a good time to take a trip out to this region I hope this is it! If price is what's keeping you from going, I'm starting a waitlist for a certain amount of pay-what-you-can seats, so just DM me to get on that, and those seats will be released about three weeks before the date of the event. Anyone can be sold anything with the right words, that's the marketers' credo. That's fundamentally a #magic act, a transformation wrought with words and images, making the customer the pawn of an unholy ritual. Whenever #Democrats (or anyone else) gets preoccupied with "messaging" this is what they refer to, this profound conviction that the right words can change everyone's minds in a moment. Dick Nixon was obsessed with #marketing. There have been many books analyzing how he and his gang made use of marketing magic to pump a semblance of trustworthiness and general audience appeal into the dour glowering Nixon. (cont'd)

There's one more point I'd like to make before wrapping up this excessively lengthy thread, and that's the value of #NFT simply as an abbreviation. The world of #finance scams and #investment gambling etc. is a world ruled by magical thinking. Again, desperation is the cause for this: only desperate people need to chase after get-rich-quick schemes and thus they're inclined out of desperation to believe in unlikely miracles. At least in the "Western" mindset, the notion of #magic is intimately mixed up with the idea of the spell, which in its ideal "Western" form appears in a zillion works of fiction, like in Harry Potter: a short incantation that produces a desired instantaneous result. I say that the solution to this terrible problem, which is about as old as Christianity itself, must involve normalizing #magic. It's not good for magic to be seen as forbidden. It's not just awful and evil for practitioners of magic who find themselves in the crosshairs (see what I did there) of Christian extremists. It's also easy pickings for swindlers, not to mention an encouragement to those whose interest in magic comes chiefly from a desire to kick off all possible social restraints. Crowley's "do what thou wilt" credo, while not necessarily untrue, is intoxicating stuff when combined with the sort of resolve that only comes from rebellion against intense social repression and authoritarian rule. Magic must be democratized, brought into congruence with the general public understanding. (cont'd)

"Magical thinking", as a term and a concept, exists because #magic is seen as forbidden. If magic were an accepted discipline in human society it would become formalized and tamed by the need for a collective set of ethics, as well as the necessity of interacting smoothly with the rest of society. But because mainstream Christianity has become terminally obsessed with mere secular dominion and absolute control over humanity, "Western" society regards magic as superlatively sinful and that attitude carries over into irreligious fields like science. Bigotry, most especially #antisemitism, plays a key role. One of the worst general slanders against Judaism is that Jews are doing evil magicks, am accusation that has been terribly inflamed by European occultists who feel at liberty to steal things from Jewish mystics. Are you unhappy? Is your social life sagging? Are you having trouble at work or in your marriage? Then buy product X and it'll fix it all. The secret to happiness is magic detergents, miraculous machines, high-speed communications and transport which are sold AS IF they are instantaneous, thus infusing U.S. culture with terminal impatience. Nobody wants to wait for anything. Any process or undertaking which takes any signficant time is rated a failure--or worse, the delay is taken as evidence of skulduggery. Instantaneity has come to be seen as equivalent to quality, to correctness, to progress and hope for the future. I'd like to stress at this point: the Western perception on #magic is imbalanced, concentrated on power and utility because it was shaped by some of the worst human beings which "Western Civilization" has brought to the surface. At the root of the "Western" understanding of magic is a supreme commitment to utilitarianism: #magic, or #magick as Crowley and other ceremonial occultists have rendered it, is chiefly about wanting things (magical intent) and making them happen (manifestation). A spell in this model is like a concentrated package of command: one commands the Cosmos and its supernatural entities "DO THIS" and it happens. Is it any surprise that magical thinking has therefore soaked into U.S. business and especially into #technology, which has its own reasons for pretending that it's the only way to get things done? #Marketing depends on magical thinking, the promise of being able to effect instantaneous and complete transformations.
