Irish Potato Bread My one of my all time favourite breakfast companion foods. This time, making it myself and tasting way better than the store bought ones. 1/ After boiling potatoes, mash with butter, add salt, pepper and Rosemary seasoning (this part is very important or else, no flavour). Mix, add flour and mix again then knead. 2/ Roll and flatten dough, cut into sections, then dry fry each piece, 2 at a time in my case. 3/ Turn, fry the other side , making sure they're cooked properly then set on plate and dry fry the rest of the slices. 4/ Serve with breakfast or on it's own. Today was meant to be when I published the first issue of The Dagda, the much-loved #Irish "Ollathair" or Great Father god who appears in the Book of Invasions. Specifically, this issue would be dealing with "Saint" Deaglán/Declan of Ardmhór ("Ardmore") in #Waterford, but also "Saints" Earc and Dubhthach. Sadly, the issue is not ready, and won't be tomorrow or the day after. I won't be skipping it, because 🥁Dagda📢, but it's gonna be a few days late. I may put out a forerunner email (subscribers only maybe) with some preamble - some discussion of key papers I can refer to in the issue, to save word-count on the issue itself. Irish and gaillige speaking friends, I'm changing my last name to my great grandmother's maiden name, which I know would have been prefaced with ní, but I'm agender so that feels a little weird, and I could go with the O' but I'm wondering if there's ever been a non gendered preface for names in Irish language, or if maybe there is one created now? I know it's maybe a long shot, but I would love to find out if I have an option, otherwise I may just run with O'. #Irish #gaillige #names

Today in Labor History July 10, 1921: Bloody Sunday: Seventeen people died and 200 houses were destroyed during rioting and gun battles in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The violence erupted the day before the beginning of a truce that was supposed to end the Irish War of Independence. As the truce approached, police launched a raid against republicans. However, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) ambushed them, killing an officer. In retaliation, Protestant loyalists attacked Catholic enclaves in west Belfast. As a result, Protestants and Catholics paramilitaries battled each other in the streets. There were also gun battles between Republicans and the police. And police also fired indiscriminately at Catholic civilians. Belfast, alone, saw almost 500 people killed from 1920–22 in political and sectarian violence related to the Irish War of Independence. The Irish War of Independence has been portrayed in the play “The Shadow of a Gunman,” by Seán O'Casey, the 1929 novel, “The Last September,” by Elizabeth Bowen, the 1931 short story, “Guests of the Nation,” by Frank O'Connor and the more recent novels: “Troubles,” by J. G. Today's issue of The Gods and Their Croziers is out! This time it's Eithne, AKA Boann, Fidelm, Feada (and maybe Cíarnait?). She's probably also Findchoem and Ness. Most outwardly a "mother" goddess, Eithne goes waay deeper than that: she's a goddess of wisdom and prophesy, and aligns well internationally with Cosmogonic Water/Cow goddesses such as Viraja and Adumbla. Today's issue of The Gods and Their Croziers is out: Cellach & Muiredach (AKA Cúchongeilt) - The Divided Divine Twins of Killala. These two are as close as #IrishLegends come to the Asvins or Dioscuri. These brothers¹ represent possibly the most popular God in international mythology, the God whose incarnations and hypostases form the protagonists for probably half of all Epic literature. They come in two *main* flavours, and the story of Cellach & Muiredach gives us both. Hi all - this is a new account just for my comparative mythology project on the Celtic-Christian Saints, which I've previously been sharing over on @seachaint@masto.hackers.town 'til now. "The Gods and Their Croziers" is my current passion - applying a comparative mythology model inherited from others such as "Taliesin's Map", I've been able to identify some key clusters of Gaelic and British saints who are, in fact, entirely Gods rewritten as Saints. Indeed, almost every saint prior to 650CE (possibly later) appears to be a fictional re-writing of a Celtic mythological character. Even more interestingly, their names and locations of worship seem to frequently, perhaps usually, correspond to native epithets and associated sites. I'm currently publishing dossiers on the God-Saints the day before their feast-days according to the Christian calendars. I try to include in each issue enough information to understand the connection, to get an idea of the function of the deity in context, and some information on names, places, animals/plants, and other dates or events that might be relevant to the god. Anyone into #Celtic or #Irish #Paganism or #Mythology ought to enjoy this work - some of Ireland's "missing" gods are _only_ recorded clearly as Saints, having never been written as native mythology (or only in highly fragmentary, coded form). But, with the "Key" from the Saints, we can unpack mythology that's remained obscure until now. Income tax collections jumped 6.1 % to €8.7 billion, signalling a healthy jobs market, while VAT – which includes taxes on fuel – rose 5.3 % to €8 billion. Corporate tax earnings slipped slightly, falling 3.1 % to €2.9 billion, and excise revenue dropped 1.2 % to €1.5 billion after last month’s cuts to petrol and diesel duties. Overall tax receipts amounted to €22.6 billion in the quarter; when one‑off Apple payments are excluded from the 2025 figures, the amount collected this year is €700 million higher than a year earlier. Despite the higher receipts, the exchequer posted a €1.2 billion deficit in Q1, largely driven by transfers to the State’s long‑term savings vehicles – the Future Ireland Fund and the Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund. Government spending reached €26.4 billion, 6.4 % above the same period last year but 1.6 % below the Department of Finance’s forecast, prompting the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council to warn that Ireland’s spending growth is outpacing that of other EU countries. Edendork Dance Hall, Co Tyrone, Ireland. A popular social venue during the Irish showband era (1960s to mid-1980s.) A huge blue dome towers above the dancefloor; a chandelier hangs from it. Once a lively venue, it is now out of fashion and out of time.
