https://reviews.pivic.com/jamie-fisher-nobody-broke-your-heart I've reviewed what is most likely the non-fiction book of the year: Jamie Fisher's 'Nobody Broke Your Heart: an intimate biography of Elliott Smith'. This is a book that is greater than the sum of its parts. It actually widened my thought world about Smith's music, something I can say about very few music books. Do not miss this book! 🆕 blog! “Book Review: The Field Guide to Understanding 'Human Error' by Sidney Dekker” ★★★★☆ This is such a useful book. It makes the case that there's no such thing as "human error" - instead most catastrophes are caused by system issues, misaligned incentives, and unrealistic processes. You are not the custodian of an otherwise safe system that … 👀 Read more: https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2026/08/book-review-the-field-guide-to-understanding-human-error-by-sidney-dekker/#BookReview

Finally read "The Dispossessed" by Ursula K Le Guin. It was interesting & generally pretty good, but I did feel that some of the parts explaining Shevek's theory were hindering the storytelling. Keep in mind the book was written in 1974 I'd still recommend to it, if only for the juxtaposition between the different worlds & worldviews e.g anarchism, communism & capitalism. She painted quite a picture with her world building. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dispossessed #Bookstodon #BookReview #Books #SciFi

It's a holiday weekend so I'm reading a lot! #BookReview (1/2) *Wooing the Witch Queen* by Stephanie Burgis -- I read this book immediately after inhaling a book I loved, so I was worried about my ability to get into something different. Then, a mere two chapters in, I knew exactly what kind of book I was in for and that I'd love it. And I absolutely did. Here are some of the reasons: Mistaken identity is a delightful trope, employed expertly here.

🆕 blog! “Book Review: Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman” ★★⯪☆☆ To call this derivative is an understatement. But that's what this genre demands; rehash all your favourite media properties into something new. It's the literary equivalent of having your Transformers™ fight your He-Man© toys. The plot, such as it is, features the Vogon Constructor Fleet destroying Ea… 👀 Read more: https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2026/07/book-review-dungeon-crawler-carl-by-matt-dinniman/#BookReview

T.J. Klune wrote a fantasy novel about a man who dies and finally learns how to live. I wrote about why it quietly made me a better person too. Wallace, Hugo, and especially Nelson stuck with me long after I closed the book. New on the blog now, five stars, tea included. #UnderTheWhisperingDoor #TJKlune #BookReview #FoundFamily #CozyFantasy

I really glad I finally got around to reading _Beloved_ by Toni Morrison because it's an absolute masterpiece of both storytelling and writing. It's obviously tough to read in places considering the subject matter is slavery. It was difficult to review because I just couldn't do justice to it. https://nocto.com/books/beloved/ #books #Bookstodon #BookReview #SummerReadingChallenge

BOOK REVIEW - CHILDREN OF STRIFE 👥 Author: Adrian Tchaikovsky 📚 Series: Children of Time [4] 📅 Started: 2026-07-15 📅 Finished: 2026-07-17 💎 Rating: 10/10 Blurb: Centuries ago, a maverick terraforming team played God with a distant planet. Out of their vanity and spite, something terrible and unexpected arose. Generations later, tormented scientist Alis is among the crew of the research vessel that rediscovers this lost outpost. But Alis wakes from nightmares of her own making to an all-too-real catastrophe on board. The rest of the crew has vanished - leaving only Cato, the belligerent mantis-shrimp captain, and Kern, the ship's AI. Searching for their lost fellows, Alis and Cato must venture into the darkness of the planet below. What did those ancient terraformers unleash? And will their last surviving crewmate become a greater threat than the world itself? Review: This series really is Adrian Tchaikovsky at his best, tbh. This book perfectly slots into the Children of Time series as well! It does have a slow start, since it's balancing three storylines at once - a past group of original terraformers/annoying tech bros who think they're gods; the post-armageddon ark ship of refugees going to that same planet; and a ragtag crew of misfits that encounter that planet in the present. I really love how this not only introduces new concepts to the series like distributed uploaded intelligence, but it also takes previous concepts from the series and expands on them in big ways! In fact, the entire crew of the Dissenter in the present timeline touches on different aspects of the previous three books which is really cool. Cato (mantis shrimp), Portia and Fabian (spiders), and Kern (ship AI) take aspects of Children of Time, Mira from Children of Ruin and Alis from Children of Memory. I love them too, it's a great cast of characters. My favourite is Cato though, and I also liked that we got some more details on the mantis shrimp and their civilisation! Also, I guess this book is also a commentary on that kind of "tech bro" culture because the original terraformers are all incredibly self-centred, annoying, with no regard for human life or decency or kindness, and they resemble the kind of people we have on Earth pretty well tbh. Their first thought upon seeing the cataclysmic events on Earth was "damn I wish I was there so I could take advantage of it and make more money". Anyway, I inhaled this book once I started it, it's a pretty easy read despite being one of Tchaikovsky's denser books. I really loved it. Compared to the other books in the series, I would put this above Children of Memory and on-par with Children of Ruin. Still, nothing surpasses the original Children of Time. #Book #Books #BookReview #Bookstodon #SFF #ScienceFiction #SciFi #AdrianTchaikovsky

https://india.mongabay.com/2026/07/why-looking-at-trees-is-a-type-of-rebellion-book-review/ #Bookreview #trees The book doesn’t try to advocate for trees or talk about their functionality and importance to human life...The tactics tree lovers normally use to try to get the unaffected to care about trees are all thrown out the window. Here, trees deserve to exist because they are living beings. ... in boldly claiming space for trees, the book veers away from anthropocentrism, the belief that human beings are the central and most important beings in the universe.

📚 My book review of The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI: How to Think About Artificial Intelligence—Before It's Too Late Cory has the amazing ability to say things in a way they completely resonate. His view on the current hype cycle and how it links to the thinking patterns of Big tech managers make a lot of sense. If only more decision makers could see beyond “oh, look, shiny” and dig a little deeper, or at the very least read this book (I've already shoved it down my manager's throat) the world would be a better place. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ https://hayobethlehem.nl/library/book/the-reverse-centaur-s-guide-to-life-after-ai-how-to-think-about-artificial-intelligence-before-it-s-too-late #BookReview #Books #Reading #GeneralClassification #Nonfiction #Politics #PhilosophyReligion #History #SocialHistory #BusinessEconomics

📚 My book review of Maurits, zoon van de Zwijger I really wanted to read a biography of the sons of William of Orange, as they are known as very innovative warlords. This book wasn't very good. The author is best known for writing musicals, a format that really doesn't work here. The made up conversations border on silly. Some historical accuracy is there. But you need to hunt for it. ⭐⭐ https://hayobethlehem.nl/library/book/maurits-zoon-van-de-zwijger #BookReview #Books #Reading #GeneralClassification #Nonfiction #BiographyMemoir #PoliticalLeaders #GeographyRegions #Europe #WesternEurope #TheNetherlands #HistoricalEras #ModernEra #17thCentury #MilitaryLeaders

The Seven Daughters of Dupree (Recommended with Caution) The Seven Daughters of Dupree by Nikesha Elise Williams. Brilliant writing. Seven trauma-hardened generations enduring every cruelty men inflict. Caution: Scenes of horrific brutality, particularly chapter 24. Mais quelque chose me chiffonne. Est-ce que c'est le lien à la nature et la manière dont il est décrit avec lequel je ne me retrouve pas ?
