@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Moreover, you should think of something about phones and tablets with healthy hardware but outdated software. So many companies especially in China stop the software updates/upgrades after like 2-3 years. And moreover, they also make it too hard for the #FOSS communities to come up with alternative operating system for these devices. Some companies lock the device to prevent installing custom OS. Some other violate #GPL and they don't release the #Linux source code for their devices. Some release the GPL code with a 1 year delay. Which means FOSS community is 1 year behind to bring custom OS to the device. All of these contribute to #ewaste and they harm the planet. And many people are forced to buy a new phone/tablet every 1-3 years to get a newer Android version.

Last parts to make my desktop wiki Neville base usable is done. Or almost - path to the book is still hard coded but that is for tomorrow to deal with. Still a lot of rough edges though and not even in beta stage (but I will start use it to test it though). RE: https://scicomm.xyz/@dantheclamman/116954518144682511 We’re going to need some legal word smithing on the order of the #GPL and the #CreativeCommons licenses to make a false statement an offence in as many ways and jurisdictions as possible (any ideas, #lawFedi folks?), some #EXIF and #ID3v2 and #PNG and comparable metadata tags for carrying legal statements attesting to non-use of media synthesis (mislabelled as #genAI by GPT vendors and NPU/TPU manufacturers), some apps to interview and educate the user about media provenance and add those tags iff applicable, and some #Fediverse and web browser add-ons to filter out media lacking them unless verifiably produced before a given date.

@mhoye@cosocial.ca I have said for years that Open Source is a threat to Free Software. Free Software's core principle is protecting users from developers, because developers cannot be trusted. Almost all LLMs have been trained off of GPL'd code, thus they are derivative works and are also all bound by the GPL. Especially if they ingested AGPL code #ai #llm #gpl #opensource #bigtech #copyleft #freeSoftware

Is Open Source licensing meaningful anymore, or are we just left with public domain? What are the legal distinctions between GPL, Apache, and MIT when AI companies and LLMs ignore the LICENSE file of your project? obviously some "business people" try to steal open source code and try to take possession of it in a "legal" way: by running it through ai and "recreating" it without all the opensource stuff like GPL and such attached. so they think they can sell it, license it however they want without this GPL commons impediment. as @@pluralistic@mamot.fr puts it in this article: This is the risk that Nolan and his partner are trying to awaken the free/open source community to: that our commons is about to be raided by selfish monsters who serve as gut-flora for the immortal colony organisms we call "limited liability corporations," who will steal everything we've built and destroy the social contract we live by. gut flora and immortal colony organisms ... i seriously doubt that any german politician would ever understand this meaning ... :-) @@pluralistic@mamot.fr even shows a way out, one that the colony organisms most probably didn't think of:  no copyright for ai generated stuff, neither books, nor pictures, nor music nor code. the principle that copyright is strictly reserved for human creativity isn't remotely controversial in legal circles. This is just how copyright works. Which means that the "be evil" version of Malus's business model has a fatal flaw. While the code that Malus produces is indeed "legally distinct" with "no attribution" and "no copyleft," it's not true that there are "no problems." That's because Malus's code doesn't have "corporate-friendly licensing." Far from it: Malus's code has no licensing, because it is born in the public domain and cannot be copyrighted. this means: If you give me code that Malus produced, you can't stop me from doing anything I want with it. I can sell it. I can give it away. We gotta get rid of MIT & Apache licenses. Use #GPL, or better yet the #AGPL or #EUPL depending on your needs. Why work for free, for the benefit of capitalists? uutils is especially disappointing for me for that reason

I'm finally trying out some local LLM models. Ollama just told me that it's trained on GPL software, so any code it produces needs to be GPL. Then in a second chat, it said the opposite. #AiIsGoingGreat #LLM #AI #GPL #FreeSoftware

This statement contains multitudes b/c #TruthSocial is a fork of #Mastodon. Initially, $DJT violated the #AGPLv3, but AFAIK they now comply with the license. I examined the fork & they primary code they added was an advertising platform. Obviously it doesn't have federation turned on.
