(1/2) #OSI leadership (both past & present) seem to take every opportunity to pretend AGPLv3§7¶4 doesn't exist. This time, it's done w/ sneaky & subtle politics. Pay particular attention to OSI's former Executive Director & a current Board seat occupant's posts upthread to mine: https://lists.opensource.org/pipermail/license-discuss_lists.opensource.org/2026-August/022583.html For the record again: a license of “AGPLv3 plus further-restriction” is both an #OpenSource & #FreeSoftware license *b/c* AGPLv3§7¶4 allows reset to plain #AGPLv3 downstream! #copyleft #AGPL

@mhoye@cosocial.ca I have said for years that Open Source is a threat to Free Software. Free Software's core principle is protecting users from developers, because developers cannot be trusted. Open Source's core principle is "hey, free stuff!" I really wish web frameworks had all gone AGPL instead of MIT/BSD. #FreeSoftware #OpenSource #GPL #Copyleft

Folks here might be interested in this post I just made to the copyleft-@next@fedi.copyleft.org mailing list — covering many issues including:

¹ In the age of #LLM-gen-AI, ppl still use the word “sustainable” to refer to #FOSS developers not getting paid enough is #disturbing.

Almost all LLMs have been trained off of GPL'd code, thus they are derivative works and are also all bound by the GPL. Especially if they ingested AGPL code #ai #llm #gpl #opensource #bigtech #copyleft #freeSoftware

Today is a good day to finally #GiveUpGitHub! & now there's YA reason: last week, #GitHub urged the FOSS community to *oppose* important #California legislation that places transparency and consumer rights requirements on deployment of LLM-gen-AI! GitHub's tactic? Disinformation claiming #FOSS licenses are incompatible with Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §22757 and California #SB1000 (which seeks to amend §22757). Read the analysis: https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2026/jul/03/github-gen-ai-california-22757-ok-for-foss-license/ #LLM #AI #copyleft #GPL #Microsoft #law

5000th toot! #introduction time. I'm originally from London, UK, now based in Alt Empordà. I make #CreativeCoding #MathArt. I use Linux since 2004 or so, currently happy with Debian though I need to find something else to keep my remaining 32bit hardware up to date #permacomputing. Most of my code is published under #copyleft licenses. I started making music on classic #Amiga, using #OctaMED SoundStudio until 2003. Then I used #PureData until 2011, but mousing patch cables was increasingly not fun so I wrote pdlua to embed Lua in Pd and later fixed some things to let libpd be compiled with emscripten to run in web browsers. In 2012 I started #LiveCoding music in the #C programming language, which I still do. Always interested in #fractals, I wrote some libraries to support my investigation of the #MandelbrotSet. I took over maintenance of Kalle's Fraktaler 2, but eventually I was fed up with its code and wrote Fraktaler-3 from scratch, to support deep zooming into hybrid escape time fractals. A companion program Zoomasm is for video output. I have a lot of projects, most sleeping until I feel inspired to work on them some more. Currently working on Mandeltron, a thing that combines live-coding with the Mandelbrot set. More on my website, including blog going back to 2005: https://mathr.co.uk

@petrillic@hachyderm.io Worse is when you have folks in other juristictions use a "non-license" that isn't legally accepted like "#PublicDomain". #0BSD is by far the most permissible for #Software, but #licensing may have good reasons for beibg chosen.#CC0 is the closest to "public domain" (except the authorship disavowal part) for creative works (incl. writing)I'm not a lawyer and AFAIK there's only #downstream forward compatibility for #copyleft, so yeah, not easy if impossible!

@bortzmeyer@mastodon.gougere.fr overheard at #FOSDEM

“There is a guy who does a lot of work to help the fediverse and to push people toward it. His name is Donald Trump.”

This statement contains multitudes b/c #TruthSocial is a fork of #Mastodon. Initially, $DJT violated the #AGPLv3, but AFAIK they now comply with the license. I examined the fork & they primary code they added was an advertising platform. Obviously it doesn't have federation turned on.
