Sci-fi author William Gibson coined the term "cyberdeck" in his 1984 novel, "Neuromancer," and people began building their own small computers when the Raspberry Pi was launched in the 2010s. Now, says @Techcrunch@flipboard.com's Amanda Silberling, "these communities have exploded in popularity thanks to women on social media who are teaching each other to build artistic, hyper-feminine computers by documenting their building processes." It's not just motivated by aesthetics — it's a rejection of Big Tech too. https://flip.it/Tjngj9 #Technology #Design #Cyberdeck

BTW, I've been using it as a streaming radio station player. The speakers are not great/not terrible but it gives a vintage radio quality to it which is charming. I wrote my first Python program that uses curses to make a console driven radio player 😎 It lasted 7 hours 47 minutes on one charge (with the display on!) using 2 x 3000mAh 18650s. #Cyberdeck #RaspberryPi #Maker #3Dprint

I created a game pad "snap-in" that replaces the keyboard, thanks to a donor 8bitdo Zero 2 Bluetooth game pad. Works great with retroarch! Updated the repo: https://www.printables.com/model/1775113-dont-panic-cyberdeck #RetroGaming #RaspberryPi #CyberDeck #DontPanic #RetroArch #3DPrinting #Maker

I wanted to add a scroll wheel and after a few ideas, I settled on this USB rotary encoder adapter by Adafruit. Make a small case for it and a large wheel and now I can scroll through my radio list quickly! It emulates a keyboard so it sends arrow up and down presses so it should work with lots of things. Push in on the wheel sends a return. Flying USB cable because it’s an accessory 😄 #CyberDeck #RaspberryPi #Maker #3DPrint

Thanks for the comments all! A couple of people mentioned it but yeah it does have strong Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy vibes! #CyberDeck #RaspberryPi #Maker

It's time for a new PFP. PocketPC, a portable Linux-based computer. Six years in development and refinement. Everything we ever dreamed of and more. Major project update in the works! We can not wait to share what we have been building in silence. @SourceParts@fosstodon.org #Linux #cyberdeck #mobilelinux #wayland #cairo #opensource #pfp #meshcore #meshtastic #lora

The build script for writerdeckOS v2.0 can be found here: https://github.com/tinkersec/writerdeckOS While I am no longer supporting this project (I can't address bug issues or help with installation any longer), folks are welcome to use the code as is or fork it and run with the project. If anyone wants to build out version 2.0 and create installation media for it, they are welcome to do so. Cheers. It was fun working on this project and I deeply deeply deeply regret having to drop it. I just hit a wall with trying to get a better installation media and I don't have time to actively work on this project and keep up my other food projects. I hope y'all have a great day. #writerdeckOS #permacomputing #linux #writerdeck #cyberdeck

@cwebber@social.coop Language and branding is important in conveying ideas and setting expectations for the general public. For example, Apple managed to convince people that “a Mac” was a totally different type of thing from “a PC”; if it's different, maybe it's better. And an “iPhone“ is not the same type of thing as a “computer”, so don't expect to be able to do everything a “computer” can; it's a new different thing. So I think we need a word that means a local-first computer that you actually control. “PC” is already taken; “sickobox” is (alas) a hard sell. I propose we use the word #cyberdeck. A *cyberdeck* means a local-first computer that you actually control. My #PinePhone with #postmarketOS is a prototype cyberdeck. @modal@mastodon.design are trying to make a ready-for-primetime cyberdeck.

Ever since I saw the Typeframe (a DIY writerdeck or cyberdeck), I wanted to build one. And so I did! I tweaked the design here and there to fit what I had on hand and my tastes. Here's the result. I'm pleased with how it turned out. #typeframe #cyberdeck #writerdeck
